I've got a Ford 250c with an independent pto (hydraulic). 50 hp, three cylinder diesel with shuttle shift and high low. The PTO shaft spins all the time, but even when its engaged it has no power; I tried a post hole digger with it and once it had to work a little bit it just stalled out.

From reading here it seems like the spinning even when disengaged is due to a worn out brake, I was wondering however if there was anything that would cause both issues and if so how big a deal it would be to fix myself; Be nice to have it working again, even if just as a backup for my other tractor.

Thanks!

Anybody have any theories?

I know the PTO brake is to keep the pto from spinning due to hydraulic coupling after PTO clutch is disengaged. if PTO had no torque it is because if the clutch pack (several friction disks) is worn out or slipping because they are not hydraulically squeezed together.

I agree that it's possibly due to clutch plates slipping. Are there many hours on the unit, and has the fluid been changed recently? Does the tractor move forwards and backwards with good ground power as usual? It might be worthwhile to talk to your local dealer about the symptoms for their input. Dutchy
