Tractor
JD 4300 w/ FEL
I tried searching but came up with nothing.
I hooked up my bush hog and noticed that the blade was spinning slowly when I started tractor. I engaged then disengaged, but pto kept turning(pretty slowly, but doesn't stop)
Any ideas what to do? I'm thinking this might be a shop fix, but hoping not.
2000 John Deere 4300 hydro less than 400 hours

Thanks in advance.

ok, here is what I have so far. One shop couldn't give me any advise other than to bring it in. Just spoke to antoher dealer and he said to check linkage on the PTO lever. Thinks there might be an issue between the 1/2 way mark and fully engaged mark. That would make sense as it doesn't shut off all the way, it acts as though it would with PTO lever 1/2 pulled back. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Check your parts manual and see if that unit has a pto brake.. if not. the pto may freewheel from fluid coupling, depending on design.

If there is a pto brake.. then it gets iffy. Could be anything from worn band to loss of hyd pressure to linkage issue.. etc..

Just got tractor back tonight from friends house. He checked the PTO lever for me. That seemed fine. The lever links to a shaft that goes internal to the PTO. He said if he pushed in on it (shaft) that the PTO would stop. I'm pretty tractor stupid, so don't know many names or terms. I checked specs and it didn't say anything when I found PTO other than HP. I'll keep looking after I get the kids to bed and see if I can find anything else in the book. Ant suggestions for me to check would be appreciated

find a parts manual and look at the exploded section on the pto.. you should be able to see if there is a break from the parts breakdown.

The 4300 does have a pto brake. It is not a brake band. It is a multiple disk brake assembly. The clutch and brake are mounted together on the same shaft. I have attached a picture that shows the setup. Item 11 is the brake assembly. Item 25 is the clutch. I hope this helps you understand how it works.

Ok, here it is. My PTO break shattered. stated it will cost about 800 dollars for fix. (mostly labor) that bites. I guess they have to change all fluid / filters to make sure there are no pieces still floating around. Anybody have any ideas how these break? Causes/preventions?

Thanks!

Normally they just wear down from trying to stop hi inertia / high speed pto loads. If it 'shattered'.. perhaps it stuck and rusted up ?? and then broke when the pto power hit it.. or perhaps it was a flaw in the part?
