Has anyone had to replace the PTO lever on the 2210. The bolt broke off on mine so I will need to put a new one in (harden steel this time) It was corroded and broke off so I will need to tap for a new one. However, after looking at it, either I wil pretty much have take the entire machine apart to get to it or drill a hole through the frame to make the repairs thru the hole. Any advise or recommendatins would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks Bill

I'll betcha' that your 2210 isn't the first one to ever have this happen... I'd be either on the phone or drop in to visit with my local JD shop mechanic for some helpful advice on maybe a work-around or some better approach to the problem that they've had experience with.

Best of luck. Let us know if the shop guys have a better way to skin that cat.

I stopped at the dealer today. Explained what the problem was to the head of the service department. I guess I wasn't explaining well, so I took him out to the 2305 and showed him the problem. He just sat and stared at it. Then said "what engineer in his right mind would do this!" You have to basically take then entire rear portion of the tractor apart to replace an .89 cent bolt. I told him I was going to drill a 1/2 in hole through the frame then drill out the existing partal bolt, tap it then replace it with a heat treated bolt. He said that is exactly what he would do in this case. He also said he was going to send a note out to the engineers asking why a hole wasn't stamped on the frame or why it wasn't manufactured with a 3/4 inch cut out. He said hopefully next year, they would have it corrected for future issues. I then said they ought to consider a bigger bolt that is heat treated to prevent it from breaking in the first place. He said good idea and was also going to recommend that also. So I have the frame drilled out and will be drilling the remainer of the bolt tomorrow and then tapping it for a bigger heat treat bolt tomorrow.

I call this bean counting engineering as the accountants had too much say in the design. My accountant wife and I have occasional disagreements over my comments that bean counters have too much say in the design process. I used to be in the engineering business for what it's worth.

I agree that, just like newer cars, these things were NOT made with working on them in mind. I think some of it is squeezing more and more into smaller packages but a part of it might also be how much profit there would be if (like many users) they had to have the dealer replace that .89 cent bolt:eek:

Then again their are (at least) two sides to everything - maybe after the dealer sends in this engineering report some engineers at JD will be sitting around wondering "how the heck did someone break that $@#% bolt?"
