I have a new 4720I. On the PTO speed switch it is marked 540/720. Is this a miss mark or do I need more engine RPM to obtain 1000 RPM. I am running a chipper that can run on 540 or 1000 RPM so it does not matter for it. I can tach the speed but wanted to know if anyone has done this?

PS I love this tractor.

You would need more RPM to achieve 1000. How much more? Is it safe? I don't know. By the way, Welcome to TBN. I am sure that someone here will be able to answer your question.

On the PTO it should have both 540 & 1000 RPM. This is controlled by the lever marked pto underneath the seat. Up is 540. Middle is neutral. Down is 1000. So, to get 1000 RPM just put the lever in the down postion. Flip the switch underneath the key to Independent. Then rev the tractor up to the PTO mark on the tachometer. That should give you 1000 RPM on your PTO. By the way, I've never seen a 4720I with a 720 RPM speed on the PTO.

Thanks for the info. I will take a tach up north with me next week and check the speed. I know the switch is under the seat and I know that down is for the faster speed. The sticker on the PTO is printed with 540/720. I will take a picture and report back the speeds from my tach readings.

The tractor is 6 hours from home so it will have to wait till my next visit.

I did put a tach on the PTO shaft. The tag is marked 584 and 790. The tach reads when the range lever in in 584 posistion 510 RPM(low mark on dash for 540 range) and 625 RPM(high mark on dash for 540 range). When the range lever in in 790 posistion 700 RPM(low mark on dash for 540 range) and 850 RPM(high mark on dash for 540 range).

Also attached is a picture of the tag for the range lever. It looks like it is tagged right.

Could someone please help me with the logic in this.

First will I even need a 1000RPM PTO in the future? I have a wood chipper that runs on 540 to 2000 RPM and it works fine at the 790 RPM speed. So do I even want 1000 RPM? Will I kick myself if I leave it at 790RPM?

I have never seen 790 RPM as an option in all the Branson info I have read. Why would they do 790RPM?

If I do want to change to 1000RPM it would most likely be a gear set change? Is this a big deal and should I ask to have it done while in warrenty?

I know I am asking a lot of questions but I am new at this.

Jeff, Some other brands call the 720 pto as 540E (economy). Quite handy for 540 pto equipment that doesn't need the full hp of your tractor. Just use the 720 gear and throttle engine RPMs back to the level that gives 540 - motor on using less fuel & wear. Wish my tractor had one.

Thanks for the info Fred. That makes good sense and I can see how that would be helpful. I guess I will talk it over with my dealer and get his opinion. I still wonder if there are some attachments I may add later that will need the 1000 RPM.
