So, I am probably going to pull a trigger on a chipper in the next month or so. I need to up a PTO (540rpm) motor to the chipper, so the motor needs to be able to handle the pressure and the GPM of my 1850.

So, anyone recommend a motor? Also, anyone have a source on a connector to go from the motor to the spline of the chipper PTO?

And finally, anyone have pictures of doing something like this? I have a lead on a used tiller and was thinking about doing the same to it as well..

On modifying the chipper to run off a hydraulic PTO, you need to know the HP required on the chipper first, then look at which hydraulic motor matches up to the HP. On the splined PTO shaft, a driveshaft shop could order or make one up for you. A friend of mine ordered a hydraulic motor to run a brush-hog . The motor runs a little faster than the 540, but you could just throttle it down to whatever rpm you desire.

Once you pick out your motor at some place like Surplus Center, the couplings are easy to find. Surplus center carries them as well as many Ag supply places. That will be a couple of nice projects!

Using the specs of 15gpm and 3000 PSI max for your 1850's PTO, the hydraulic calculators at SurplusCenter show this:

15gpm will theoretically turn a 6.4ci motor at 541 RPM -- that's about as close as I could get to 540. So, you'd want to size the motor as close to 6.4 ci as possible -- on the lower side. If you go larger displacement, the motor won't turn 540 RPM. Note that it MUST be rated for at least 3000 PSI.

3000 PSI on a 6.4ci motor will theoretically give 3057 in lbs of torque at 540 RPM.

This would theoretically give you 26.24 PTO HP. Note that all of these calculations are straight from them and I have not calclulated in the efficiency of the system. Note also, that moving to smaller motors decreases your HP from this theoretical number (because of lower torque), so you'd want to stay as close to 6.4ci as you could.

There's 6.2ci Char-Lynn's on Surplus Center that are rated for 3000 PSI continuous. Most of the 6.0 - 6.2 ci ones that I looked at there are not. For example, looking at the less expensive White WR and RS series motors (I have their spec books) are not rated for 3000 PSI continuous.

Here's the least expensive of those 6.2ci Char-Lynn's that's rated for 3000 PSI -- but you need to take into consideration what kind of shaft you'll need for the necessary coupler to the chipper. Don't just go buy this one until you've figured out how you'll mount it and couple it up...

Hope this helps.

On an 1850, the flow on the PTO is supposedly 18 GPM at 3200 psi which means for 540 RPM you would want a 7.7 cu in displacement which would have a theoretical 39 HP capability. That is with the engine at full RPM I assume. They have some for $225 - $250. If you did not need the maximum HP the 1850 is capable of while running the hydraulic motor at 540 RPM and if your implement and hydraulic motor can handle faster RPMs, you could go with a smaller displacement hydraulic motor and idle down the 1850 some. Just need to make sure everything can handle the maximum flow, pressure, and RPMs.

Goof catch, Ken!!!!

I used the PTO output of the 1845 instead of the 1850!

I'm glad you caught that and corrected me! I thought the PTO HP sounded very low, but after midnight I didn't doublecheck. :(

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the reply. The chipper in mind is the Jinma. Cheap, but so am I. Can't rationalize 5K on a chipper. Apparently if you make some inexpensive mods they machines hold up pretty well. They are rated to 50HP or so so that is not a concern.

So is it everyones opinion that I will have to have the connecting collar machined? I would have thought that I was not the only one trying to accomplish this...

Nope. See earlier post above. Surplus Center and many other places carry them.

I have an orphan tractor an Ingersoll Rand BL370 with standard hydraulic flow to the loader arms at 17 gpm [ I don't remember the pressure rating ]. I would like to do the same thing buy a hydraulic motor that runs pto attachments. I would also like to have the Chinese chipper. Skid Steer Solutions makes a three point hitch adaptor with a hydraulic motor with overrun clutch three models about $1,800 dollars each. I don't know much about hydraulics would be nice if I could build something much cheaper to do the same job. David

Hear is a motor with a built in spline. I called up the surplus center and asked them for a motor recommendation for my tractor and they came up with this motor. It has a agricultural spling drive shaft 6 spline. They have 3 sizes of motors
