The PTO lever on my TO35 has 3 positions, I think the top says hydraulic, the center says neutral, and the bottom says ground.

The PTO works when I put the lever in the top position, but not in the the other two....okay, but what is 'ground'?

Ground driven PTO is a no longer common arrangement where the PTO is geared directly to the differential drive shaft. When in "Ground" position the PTO will turn only when the tractor is moving, and its speed will vary directly with ground speed irrespective of the engine speed, transmission gear or clutch position. Further, it will tury backwards if the tractor is moving backward.

Useful for a few types of equipment such as PTO driven hay rakes and some no longer common planters, ground driven PTO is no longer common.

It was also handy to unplug round balers by backing up.

Top position is 540 rpm's at the pto with engine at "rated speed". If you don't have a tach, that's usually around 2/3rds to 3/4 of "full throttle" That's normal for most pto driven implements (such as a mower)

The middle position is neutral.

"ground" was an experiment of sorts. It never really caught on. Massey Ferguson was the only brand I know of that used it. It basically drives the pto at a speed proportional to the tractors ground speed. It was intended for pto driven hay rakes and manure spreaders. If the tractor is driven in reverse, the pto shaft turns in reverse. It was handy for clearing plugged corn pickers and such, but some equipment was easily damaged by reversing the pto input. Another handy use is when a post hole digger gets the auger stuck. You can jack the rear wheels up off the ground, reverse the pto, and "unscrew" the auger.

After a lifetime of being around Massey's, I SHOULD recall what the top position is marked but I'm drawing a bit of a blank. I BELIEVE it's marked "engine" and not hydraulic.

(I'll check on your manual tonight when I'm home. Would have done that last night but the Mrs. had other plans for me. ;) )

I have your manual. I sent a PM with mailing info.

The pto lever is marked;

In upper position, "ENGINE PTO"

Middle position, "NEUTRAL"

Lower position, "GROUND PTO"

Ground speed pto will turn the pto shaft one revolution per every 20" of ground travel.

Engine speed pto turns pto shaft at 18/50th of engine rpm.
