pto output shaft stopped working on ym 240

Hi I was mowing with my 6 ft. flail mower and the output shaft quit working. I was cutting over grown brush. I know I shouldn't but I was going very slow. My question is, is there a shear pin in the pto like in a 8n ford? Or is there something else internal thats broken? The tractor goes in all gears forward and reverse. The pto is a 2 speed unit and i get nothing in any position. Thanks in advance for your help, David

there is certaintly NO shear pin on an 8n pto assembly ( shaft, bearing, seal, bearing carrier, wear ring, snap rings.. etc. )

Thanks for responding. On my 8n I broke a steel pin of some sort when bush hogging. I removed the grease fitting and the cap on the opposite side from the grease fitting and replaced the steel pin. Then it all went back together and it worked. Thanks, David

you had an over running coupler that slips onto the tractor PTO shaft. it is held on by a roll pin, there are usually 2 plugs, or zerks that you line up to driv ethe pin in and out.

the ORC is NOT part of the tractor or pto assembly.

it's a attachment.. just like a mower. and it certaintly isn;t a shear pin. it's a coupler pin.

when i see a roll pin on a splined connection shear.. it's NOT fropm rotational play, unless the pto spline is wore SLAP out and the roll pin is takig the rotational load. but rather it is from THRUST forces.. IE.. when the telescoping pto shaft is TOO LONG and pushes onthe orc shearing the pin.

to the OP:

recheck.

take mower shaft off tractor pto and see if tractor pto is spinning. maybee it is soemthing inthe driveline for the mower.

also.. make sure you hav enot got it between pto ratios, and pto lever is engaged.

With the engine off and PTO in gear. Try to turn the shaft by hand. If you can turn the shaft then, you are going to have to take a look inside to see why it's not going in gear. I think there is a pin in the lever that puts the PTO in gear that may have come out or broke

Hey thanks, I appreciate the pm. Very helpful. I got her going. Not sure what I did though. The lever for pto clicked in all 3 positions but nothing on output. Then I put it in reverse and it locked in. Its been working ever since. Thanks and really appreciated the download Winston.

that unit doesn't have an internal ORC does it?

Yes, the 240 does have an internal over run clutch.
