Been getting ready to hook my new Ramsplitter 3pt wood splitter up to my BX2230 using the tractor hydraulics. If I decide to go with a Prince PTO pump instead, how big of pump can that PTO run? Looking at 11 GPM vs 17 GPM. What are you guys using on your BX series tractors?

Per Surplus Center that 11.4 pump takes 18.1 HP. Your BX like mine has 17 HP at the PTO. Considering 20% losses that is the biggest you can safely go, but depends on how you load the cylinder using the fluid. Stick the ram and you could stall the engine. I would make sure to have a relief valve set before the stall pressure. I am considering the same set up so will be waiting other replies also.

Good information! Guess 17gpm is out. If I go this route I may try an 11. I'd bet it would be ok setting it up as you describe on anything but the most knotty wood.

How is it that my 22 ton pull-behind splitter with 6.75 hp can split the most narley wood, but a 17 hp pto won't drive any splitter without fear of stall?

The dedicated splitter/6.75hp engine has a 2 stage pump. Hi speed/volume for quick ram movement Low speed/volume for tough spots in the wood. The pump will do this on its own when it senses increased pressure/reduced volume flow (exactly how I don't know) The pump that the OP is considering does not "downshift" like a 2 stage pump requiring much more hp. Hope this helps!

Ericher,

That begs the question...why wouldn't a two stage pump be offered for the pto as well?

I don't know

You may want to PM member J_J as he seems to be very knowledgeable in hydraulics!

I was going worst case scenario on my post. Depending on what you split you will probably never develop the full 11 HP load. I have a little 5 Ton electric splitter that is amazing. I am convinced that 35 Ton splitters are designed to get the money from our bigger is better notions. Based on what my 5 ton will do any more than 10 ton is probably more than any but professionals working 3' logs will ever need.
