I just purchased a 2000 nh 1920 with bh. It has a pto pump. I was removing the backhoe and everything was great until I tryed to remove the pump from the pto shaft. I pressed the button on the sleeve but it apears that they are rusted together. I tryed tapping with a hammer and prying a little but I don't want to break anything. Is this common? Is there a tool to help with this? Any help would be great. Thanks, Dan.

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!

(Sorry, Had to get that out of my system).

My B7100 had a backhoe with a "stuck pump". The previous owner had tried to remove the pump - unsuccessfully. A friend & I (he used to run an earth moving business) spent half a day trying to remove the pump. We ended up using an angle grinder to cut the coupling - previous owner had slipped the coupling back off the retaining ring and it had twisted on the splines - impossible to remove with a 20T hydraulic bearing puller and oxy set

Bare Co sell pump <-> PTO couplers. I now own one of theirs and am able to remove my PTO pump :) I have added another black mark for the previous owner

Assuming your adaptor isn't twisted on the splines - oxy + puller is the correct answer. There is a bit of debate as to "heat then quench then pull" or "heat and pull". Either way, ensure you have a new PTO seal! We did this Saturday morning and by the time we had it off, the "tractor shops" had closed for the weekend. There is nothing worse than having the oil slowly leak all over your mate's workshop for a day and a half :(

Hope this helps!

I don't know if it's common or not but it has happened to me several times. I've sprayed it with wd-40 (a lot) and used a crowbar to get it off-major PITA. I now make sure I have plenty of grease on the pto shaft and inside the pump before I hook it up.

From the use of the pto pumps for years in the ag business and having frustrations like what you are talking about and trying many types of penetrating oils, types of everyday grease we finally did what the manufacturer recommended and use a product that was devised years ago for their planters and is available thru Case-IH dealers. The only ones we get calls to remove now are from people who don't use this stuff.
The stuff is called MolyKote and the green label describes it as G-N assy-paste. The Case part number is 384646R-1.

You should soak it in penetrating oil for a couple hours to days before going psyho on it. GM has the best penetrant. It's a foam and gets into places. Go to your chevy or GM dealer and get some.

Link to info on the stuff

WD-40 is a water dispersant and not a penetrant - won't due much. Spend the bucks (under $10) and buy something that real mechanics use when they are only given so much time to finish a job.

When it is off, use an extra fine file and smooth the coupler and PTO shaft. Remove any rust and then slather it up good with anti-seaze.

Diesel fuel and auto trans fluid both penetrate well for me. Had a crop duster tell me the best he had ever found was turbine engine oil from his crop dusters, guess jet engine would be the same. Soak it down couple times a day for a couple days and wa-la off it comes. Keeps promising to bring me a quart of used the next they change, but keeps forgetting. Said new it is real pricey per quart.
