montana 2840
i have a 2840 gear. when i engage my pto without a load it goes in smoothly with a little or no crunch, now when i have an implement on even with letting it settle out and clutch fully depressed i get some grinding sometimes i need to double clutch while holding the pto lever in order to get it to engage. mind you the external adjustment for the clutch is adjusted. it has been back to the dealer but with no implement on. now i'm scheduled to return to the dealer with the hog on. my question am i expecting too much, is this normal for the tractors. the dealer has been great they just don't want to replace something for nothing, he has a new clutch and new gears sent on montanas advice.

I would return it and let him check it out at least. I have had tractors that would grind a bit as the lever was engaged, but it was usually an adjustment issue. I did have one tractor(MF481) that I never could get adjusted to go in smoothly every time.

I have one of the 2840's and I dont have any grind. And you say it stops grinding after it gets going??

yes once the pto is fully engaged it's ok. here's the scenario pto driven implement on. clutch fully depressed and free play adjusted correctly. wait a few seconds grab lever and engage pto sometimes it grinds sometimes it wont go it unless i let the clutch out a little and you'll fell it go in on the lever. i just want to make sure this is really and issue or nature of the beast before i make a big deal about it. the way it has gone is montana has been great they sent him a new clutch and replacement gears because they were afraid of the grinding that has been going on. he had it at his shop without a pto driven implement on it and it worked ok. he dosent want to change non faulty parts i tried to get him to put a hog or something on it but he said it would'nt matter. i got it back home but my bush hog on and guess what it still did it. all input especially from 2840 owners is appreciated.

That is normal in my experience. With the pto shaft stopped and having an inertial load the gear on the shaft wants to stay still. The engine driven gear is spinning, but just stirring oil. When you clutch it spins down, but even the slightest clutch drag will keep it spinning some - hence a little grind as the gear stops to engage. Sounds as if youre doing it about right - fairly gently but with intention. The mating points that grind at the very beginning of engagement will round a little with wear and become much more resistant to any danger of chipping. :)

tractor is at dealer montana supplied parts are being replaced. adjustments are going to be corrected. for the record my dealers told me they have had to open up a couple of 2840's and adjust the clutch indside the tractor, it seems they make it out of the factory not quite adjusted properly.
