PTO RPM gauge not working

First off... that is not a PTO rpm gauge. It's the engine tachometer and displays the engine speed in RPM. If the gauge end of the cable is not spinning when the engine is running, then there is a problem with the cable. However, I don't understand how the hour meter is working if the cable is not turning. These gauges used to be mechanical... perhaps the newer replacement have an electric hour meter in them.

Could be the cable is worn out OR it could be the gear mechanism from the engine. Hopefully it just needs a new cable.

Now that makes sense. Most likely cause is a broken tach cable. When you remove it from the gauge, try pulling on the square drive end of the cable. If the cable is broken, you should be able to pull the broken "half" of the cable out of the sheath.

I wouldn't really say that $135 is heavy on the wallet.... especially if you got a good deal on it. Not to rub salt in the wound, but I'm assuming you bought the new gauge because the old one wasn't working. Chances are, it does and the cable would have fixed it.
New gauge was needed the needle was broke off the old one
so far the cost is just maintence

hydro filter & clean suction screen one gallon hydro
fuel filter
air filter
fender mounted seal beam light
"diesel" medallion for front grill
used wire harness front lights in grill
rpm gauge and new cable
gear lube front axle
two new o rings FEL hyd. couplers
radiator cap
More of a want not a need - new rear tires dealer take offs from storage and two new fronts

Sounds like you'll have a good machine. I gotta ask though... how did you manage to clean the suction screen at the expense of only one gallon of hydro oil? Filter and reuse the old?

PO said he recently changed hydro fluid. At a request from the dealer I took them a sample and they told me to re- use it. Suction screen was spot on clean ,just a very minor amount of metalic flakes . Fluid was filtered re used.
After this season I am going to drain and add new.
