I purchased a used pole hole auger yesterday. The shaft guard is metal and dented in so it won't telescope in/out. The only thing I can figure is trying to take it off the shaft and beating the heck out of it until I can get it apart, but I still don't think I can ever get it to slide freely again. I would like to just replace it, being the safety conscious person I am. So, two questions...

First, cost: TSC has two models that run $80 and $120. Are the guards seriously that expensive? That's almost half the cost of a new shaft. Is there somewhere I can get them less expensive, even if I have to order it online?

Second, compatibility: Will the newer shafts work on the older square pto shafts? The one I have looks pretty small, maybe an inch or so on each side (square).

I hate those cursed guards, the one on my brush hog is the biggest pain in the rear end when it comes time to grease the yokes. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I realize the importance of having it there. The last thing I want is for someone (or me) to get hurt helping me dig holes. Thanks all,

Matt

Well took the old shield off today and inspected the shaft. The shaft yokes say Neapco so I expect the entire assembly is made by them. Only #s I could find were N by Neapco and KHJ 675. Says Made in USA.

I might try to put a piece of pipe or something down inside the other shaft and see if I can pound them apart. If so I will just need the metal and plastic pieces that old the shaft end to the yoke because the previous one got eaten up as it spun around the shaft. I think I can probably get those from Neapco or that site you sent if I can repair the old shaft.

Also figured out why it is all beat up but haven't figured out how to fix it yet. Looks like the auger is an International Manufacturing Company from some Internet research I did (found a # 050815 on it and went from there). When I raise the auger and the PTO is running the shaft comes into contact with the brace that runs between the two sides of the support frame that comes up from the lift arms. A couple times of that probably bent the cover. Unfortunately I scratched the shaft up a tad from doing it today without the cover on as I was making sure everything else worked.

Thanks for the info.
