I have a Herd 750 spreader that I got at a good price. I assumed Id have some fixups to do.

The previous owner did not relube the PTO shaft and it is rusted together like you cannot believe..two weeks of heating and a slug of penetrating oil and it wont budge.

So, I go to remove the entire thing from the gearbox shaft. Its held on with a 5/16 shear pin.

When you look at the hole on one side it is 5/16. On the other side it is smaller. you cannot drive the pin as a result in both directions. I have tried a drift punch, heat. and drill bits. I cannot get a drill bit to even bring up a shread. So the question is how on earth do I get the shear pin out so I can install a new PO shaft?

It had to go in threaded end first. If you take off the nut and pound the crap out of it, it doesn't move? at all. It's not sheared and the pieces are just stuck in the collar is it. That way you couldn't drive it at all. The shaft holes wouldn't be lined up with the collar holes.

It sounds like it was assembled with a taper pin, which I've never seen around farm machinery before.
You'll have to either beat it apart with a drift punch or drill it out with supertanium drill bits.
If the ends aren't already flush with the shaft surface, grind them so that they are. Often a taper pin will swell on the small end when you try to pound it out.

The other alternative is to try to split the PTO shaft to relieve pressure on the gearbox shaft. A Dremel tool with cutting discs will work, but pack a lunch, you'll be at it for a while.

Don't fritter away your time with titanium bits, go cobalt, drill press, slow speed, cutting oil and it will be out in no time.

according to the Mfg its a roll pin...it is hollow but i cannot believe how blasted hard it is. I may end up having to take the gearbox assembly off and use drill press but even then I wonder what sort of animal I am dealing with

Roll pins are typically spring steel, and so are pretty hard. There are two types, once that looks like an extended "C", and the other resembles a "jelly roll".

With a good fitting drift punch it SHOULD come out, but I should be a millionaire by now too, so take that for what it's worth.

Usually a drill bit will grab and break if it does bite at all.

Who is the maker of the PTO shaft? I have a Eurocardan PTO shaft that has a roll pin in that size, it moves relatively easily.
