Back in February/March of this year I purchased a mower deck as part of a Kubota package (B7510, FEL, 60 blower & mower). Well spring up here North of the 45th has finally progressed to the point where I needed to mow the lawn for the first time this year (May 16). Shortly after starting to mow the PTO shaft fell off the mower. I assumed that I had not attached it correctly and took care to get in on securely the second time, and the third, fourth, fifth,…… What can I say, I’m a bit of a slow learner some times. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

After close examination of the PTO connection to the mower I noted that the retaining ring was not sliding all the way back into place over the bearings that secure the shaft to the spline. I did everything I could to get it to lock in place but no luck. I swapped the shaft end for end and it is not the shaft. Either end locks to the tractor spline just fine and neither end will lock to the mower spline. I compared dimensions of the tractor and mower splines as best I could and if there is a difference, it must be very subtle. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I have attached a digital photo.

This is the shaft that came with the mower. It still has the Land Pride sticker on the safety shield. I tried everything I can think of, short of getting out the file and making “modifications”. Given the safety implications of a PTO shaft that constantly drops off the implement I decided against trying to tweak this myself.

The grass is growing but I’m not mowing. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Anybody got an idea?

Sure would like to see more than I can see in that picture. Does the mower have a slip clutch or is it a shear bolt? And you're able to swap the PTO driveshaft end for end? That sounds like Land Pride is different from any of the implements I had.

Bird,

Here are a couple more photos. Hope they help.

Sorry, but I can't see what's keeping it from going on far enough to lock. If they go onto the tractor PTO output shaft, then you obviously know how to do it and are holding the lock ring back to get it started. Is there a difference in the length of the implement input shaft from the end to the groove the bearings lock into or maybe a burr on that shaft? Otherwise, I just don't know.

i can't see anything from the photos that would stop it from locking on, is it possible that it is something on the connection at the mower deck? and not the pto shaft, that is stopping it from slipping on far enough to lock?

Bird,

The spline can push clean through the collar on the shaft, so its not bottoming out. I can actually push the shaft on to where the bearings are past the groves (lands?) that the bearings fit into, so that doesn't seem to be it.

We check the mower shaft; visually, by feel and with a pair of callipers. If that son-of-a-gun is differnt than the one on the tractor, and it MUST be, I surely can't tell you where. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I sent a fax to the dealer (no e-mail), and he obviously hasn't had time to reply yet.

I'm not gonna be a happy camper if I have to take 1/2 a day off from work, load it in the trailer and make the 100 mile trip to Clare. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

With the shaft off the mower and the tractor, can you apply pressure to the bearing that locks on the mower shaft, the one that is INSIDE the collar. If you can and it shows no resistance to movement with the collar in "locked" position then you should return the shaft.

How about the shroud on the shaft? IS it a little too long, and holding up on the mower gear box?

Have you tried wire brushing the stub shaft on the mower? I'm thinking either a little bit of dirt or paint starting to bubble.

I have a landpride rear mower and had the same problem when I first purchased it. I could not get the shaft to lock onto my pto. After about twenty minutes I discovered that the bearings in the shaft where jammed into position. I released the collar and with the plastic head of a screw driver popped the bearings loose. After that it clicked onto the pto and has been working perfectly since. I'm not sure if you have the same problem, but it may be as simple as that.

Hope things start working.

Could it be something as simple as a locking c-clip not letting it slide back enough to seat? I had to finagle my KK pto shaft onto the gearbox and wiggle and cuss at it a bit to get the c-clip in the groove it rode in..

I bought a slip clutch that wouldn't lock in place. It needed to have 1/8' removed (machine shop, $15) from the end that was on the tractor to allow the slip clutch to go on far enough to lock.

I had a defective PTO U joint on my BX2000 60 in. MMM. The firs time it came off it ruptured the hydro filter and bent one of the parking brake linkage. Kubota (the dealer) instisted that I had not installed the shaft properly. At first I thought that they were right but I found that if I wiggled the shaft and pulled on it, it would come off. The problem was in the locking mech. on the PTO shaft. As I recall, there were three balls that locked into the grove on the shaft. One of the balls was hung-up and would not snap into the grove. I tried to lube it but it still would not lock properly. Kubota finally replaced the U joint and it resolved the problem.

Do you have any info on the final resolution to this problem? I just bought the exact same mower and am having the exact same problem and am curious as to how you resolved it.

Thanks,
Mike
