PTO shaft for my Bush Hog won't collapse fully anymore.

It's been extended for years now & when I went to put it on my old 2N, it's too long.
The male portion is clean & smooth, the female end seems to have *gunk* & rust build up in the last 4".
I tried scraping it our with a steel rod & rinsing the old grease out with gas.

Any good ideas on how I can clean & smooth that last 4"?

It was used as it is on the 2N when it was new, before I got the bigger MF50.

Try spraying a lot of brake cleaner or some B12 down the tube and let it sit. I did that to mine and it worked fairly well. I propped the shaft up so it can have time to work. Leave it overnight then use some silicone spray lube the male end and start working it in and out driving it deeper each stroke. It should clear out.

Sorry link did not work. Just search Berryman B12. We use it all the time. Has a red label and most automotive parts stores carry it.

Had one that had been in an 8n for no telling how long. Seized. I tied one end to a fence post and pulled it apart with the tractor. Light sanded some surface rust off, greased and reassembled

Mix automatic transmission fluid and acetone 50/50. Set shaft so when you put the mixture on the male end it will soak in the seize area. Do this every few hours for a day. Then try separating the ends. Works pretty good if you can tap on the bottom end of the male PTO to drive it out. If you have a big open end wrench to put over the bottom of the PTO and hit the wrench it usually doesn't take much to free it up.

The shaft is probably twisted or bent. If so, it is junk.

Yes, beware of this very thing! I'd check to see how true each piece is before spending a lot of time trying to resuscitate.

If needed on can replace one piece (PTO shaft pieces can be purchased rather than a completely new one). BUT, only if it's an issue of internal corrosion or such.
