If the tractor pto has 6 splines and it is a 1 3/8 can I assume the other end of the shaft which fastens to the Bushhog gearbox and has 6 splines is also 1 3/8?
Depends, IF the rotary cutter was made for a 1000 RPM tractor, then NO, also some really old import rotary cutters even turned the opposite direction. ..... but I have 6 spline on both ends. Both ends look identical in size but of course the tractor side has the push detent and the implement side although splined has a bolt pinning (Not a shear bolt) it to the Bush Hog. I want to put a slip clutch in-line and was double checking before I ordered. I couldn’t find dimensions on Bush Hogs website.A lot of them have something like an 1 1/8" keyed shaft.
I’m possibly wrong but I think 1000 RPM pto shafts have 20 splines (1 3/8) or 21 splines (1 3/4). Thus tractor equipped with both 540 & 1000 outputs cannot be mixed.
