I got a Jinma chipper and am setting it up, of course the PTO saft that came with it is too short, so I went to TSC to get a longer one, I saw one with a slip clutch and thought it was a good idea? So I bought it! But I need to trim it a little and thought I would make sure it was a good idea, before I cut it?

So what do you think?

You already bought it, so cut it and use it. Make sure it it not too long!!!! A too long shaft will do major damage to the tranny when you raise the chipper and drive the shaft into the rear end of the tranny. In the shortest position, the shaft should still have at least 1"-2" of collapsion (sp?) travel. Keep in mind that the shortest length is NOT the normal working length or position. It could be at dead level or above horizontal when you fully raise the chipper.

For future chipper buyers, my opinion is that it is not necessary. The chipper has five drive belts. They will start to slip in place of a slip clutch. you will know when the belts slip. The noise and the odor of burning rubber will catch your attention. Adding a slip clutch is kinda like suspenders and a belt.

The good news is that you may find a use for that slip clutch shaft on another implement you own or may buy in the future that will really need one.

So what do you think will slip first, the belts or clutch? I hate to think I wasted my money.

Depends how you adjust the slip clutch.

Also, check your PTO lengths with the chipper's PTO between level and 15deg of level with the tractor's PTO shaft. 15deg is recommended max deflection when operating the Jinma.

Are you making fun of the way I dress??? :D

Seriously, I have thought about doing the same thing. Are those belts really as good as having a slip clutch in terms of tractor protection? My PTO shaft arrived trashed anyway, so why not push the chipper back a little more, get a quality drive shaft... and add a slip clutch?

I agree, the belts should/will slip of the flywheel came to a complete stop/lock with proper belt tenison.

I have had some customers adjust and or shorten the lift pin mounts on the side to get the chipper closer the the tractor.

What about just adding a slip clutch to the existing too short shaft.. vs buying a whole new shaft with slip clutch... just match the ends up.

No slip clutch. Redundant to the belts and undesireable from the standpoint that it shortens the articulated length of the pto shaft.
Id call it paying good money for an operating penalty.

Did you read the originals posters message?? His problem is with the oem shaft being a bit too short. At this point buying a slip clutch may lengthen his setup and make it work.. with no downsides.. and probably cheaper than a new shaft.

All depends onthe specific measurements though.. which he has not posted..
