How do you store your PTO shafts when not installed?

Right now mine sit up on a shelf and collect dust until the next session. Anyone hang them off walls?

I am planning on building a firewood shed and storing my snow thrower and wood chipper underneath. Is it bad to store them outside and outside of the rain.

I store them either on the implement with the tractor end chained up by the pto shaft cover chain, or on a shelf. I ALWAYS bag the unattached ends with plastic bags to keep the dust and dirt out of the spline and universal joint.

I only have one PTO shaft on my bushhog and it stays on the equipment. I push it all the way back on the shaft so not much is exposed, then I lift it up and tie with wire to the Toplink on the bushhog to keep it out of the dirt. I also set the bush hog up on some concrete blocks so it is about 8" off the ground. The next time I use it, I will give it a good greasing before I hook it up. It has been setting there for 2 years now as due to drought we haven't needed to do any pasture mowing.

I remove mine and store them in my shed. It not only keeps them out of the weather, it offers me a good opportunity to inspect and service them if needed. Then whenever I need them, they're ready to go. :)

I've never heard of removing a pto shaft from a piece of equipment for storage.

:confused3:

What's the point of taking the things off the impliment they are matched to?

Collapsed, they are sealed from dust, grit and water. Chained to the top link pin with a slight downward angle, and water is a non issue.
Greased when they are dropped for the winter, and greased again before each use, and crud can't begin to be a problem.

Nope, I don't get it. Folks do what makes sense to them, but this one leaves me.

One of the main reasons I remove mine is that I store my 64" snow blower in my shed and I don't have enough room unless I disassemble some of the parts - and that's one of them. I even go as far as removing the blower chute because it's in the way of something else that goes in the shed for the summer. I also made 3 quick attach wheels for the SB so I can easily move it around in the shed without breaking my back. One on each of the skids and one on the front of the blower. The wheels also allow me to quickly drop the SB in my garage and move it out of the way when I need to use the back blade instead - takes about 2 minutes (if that) to install all 3 wheels. Some might say I'm too organized, but that's how I like things.

If you have a front mounted implement with a mid pto, you don't have a choice. I hang mine on the wall.

My equipment stays at the farm. No protection from scrapers. Anything small including 2 bottom plows loaded up and hauled off. Lost two front half of the PTO shafts last year. The mice had loaded one of the female square tubes full of hickory nuts. TSC sure is proud of their PTO shafts. Over 300 dollars for a completely new one. New to me last week was a 12 foot bush hog. Main PTO greased well and chained thru nuckle back to frame.

I remove the whole shaft for over-winter storage, and the front half gets taken off every time I park an implement. The splines never get rusty that way, and anyone planning on stealing an implement from me is going to have to buy at least SOMETHING before they can use it..
