Getting old. Sold the ranch. Sold the tractors. Moved back to the city.
Since I got the 1964 MF-135 diesel about 18 months ago, I haven't used the pto at all. I noticed when I bought the tractor that it was hard to shift into the engine pto range but it did shift into that range after a lot of fiddling. The 135 has the manual 2-stage clutch and a 3-position pto shifter (ground pto, neutral, engine pto).

It shifts OK between neutral and ground pto and the pto shaft turns when I move the tractor forward and reverse when in the ground pto positon like it should.

Now I'm getting a lot of gear grinding when I try to move the pto shift from neutral to engine pto. I'm naturally reluctant to try to jam it into gear with all that grinding noise I'm hearing now.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Make sure the PTO clutch is adjusted correctly and/or not dragging. (Detailed in service manual) When shifting into GROUND SPEED PTO, so long as the tractor is sitting still there'll be no gears clashing even if the clutch was fully engaged. (Ground speed pto draws power from rear output shaft of tranny) ENGINE PTO is a different story. Clutch needs to be completely disengaged for clean shift in/out of engine pto position. PTO clutch is accessed from underneath tractor, same inspection/access cover as main clutch.

I had a MF 481 with the 2 stage clutch. The original difficulty shifting into PTO was the same as it had when the clutch just started to get out of adjustment. When it started grinding it was really out. Takes a suprisingly small amount of clutch adjustment to bring it back in. The instructions in a owner/service manual should be staightforward and an easy fix(mine was).

Thanks for the input. I also have the I&T shop manual for the 135 and Big Dean's CD to help me along. I'll tackle this next week since I'm heading South for an auction this Sat. Hope to have lotsa fun getting the clutch back in shape.

Maybe the fact that the PTO hasn't been used much leaves a bit of rust on the plate and disc. Adjusting and then using that clutch will probably fix it.
