I bought a new slip clutch for my yanmar. It comes assembled and greased so all I had to do was put it on the PTO and click it in place.

So two days ago I hook up my tiller and run down a 40' row. At the end I pick up the tiller and start to back up - look down to see the pto shaft falling off. It wasn't making any clunking or scraping noises. Had I not looked down I wouldn't have noticed it falling off.

The slip clutch had come straight apart.. it was like it wasn't even held together. Nothing looks broken, though I couldn't find one of the square metal clips.

should I return this, or try and fix?

I would START by trying to fix it.
There is a fair/good chance that in the process of taking it apart to fix it I just MIGHT figure if it was assembled wrongly, if I had skipped an installation step, failed to adjust something somewhere, etc.
Then I would have a good argument to present to the dealer I bought it from - maybe (-:

If it was the actual slipping part of the slip clutch where the disks are are you missing the bolts/springs that hold it together and are used to adjust the spring tension?:D

Are you talking about an Overrunning clutch, or a slip clutch?

I can't see how a slip clutch could possibly "fall apart" as you describe. But, it's been a while since I've had one apart, too.

Got some pictures?

Overrunning - thanks for catching my type-o.

Did you adjust it before putting it to work ?

It wasn't a slip clutch as I wrote in the title. It's actually an overrun clutch.

No problem!! Can't get good answers if we're all talking about the wrong thing ;):p

If you've got all the parts, I'd say put it back together, or at least attempt to. It could have been caused by something as simple as the big snap ring not being fully seated in its groove when it was assembled. IIRC, there should only be about 7 parts.... the male PTO shaft, 2 pawls, 2 springs, and the female PTO shaft end, and then the snap ring that holds the whole thing together.

Mine has three springs, but I only found two of the square "pawls"? in the dirt. I'm sure the third was buried somewhere. Everything looks OK.. nothing seems to be broken or worn out. Without the third metal square I'm kind of stuck, tho. :/

Are the new overrun clutches different from the old ones? What I remember about my overrun clutch is that I had to remove a zerk fitting and drive a drift-pin thru the tractor's pto shaft to hold the overrun clutch on. Do the new ones just clip on the PTO without needing to do this? It's been about 15 years since I installed an overrun clutch on a Ford Jubilee and things may have changed, but. . . .
