I'm thinking of a 72"rototiller to put behind the MF 1440.

My Question is, do I have to install a slip clutch or does the PTO have one built in to it?

Very likely has one on the PTO shaft. It may not have one, and just shear bolt instead.
Have you seen the tiller you are planning to put behind the 1440?

:p check out the tiller to see if it's got one built into it some where.I have a MF 4850 tiller and the slip clutch is on the shaft that comes from the pto gear box that runs to the chain case on the side of the tiller. You wouldn't even know it's there unless you take off the guard [shield] that covers the shaft. I've also seen slip clutch's on the pto shaft right before the gear box.Not sure if the 1440 will beable to drive a 72" tiller. That seems like its way to big for the amount of HP that you have. Takes lot's of HP to turn a tiller especially if it's hard or wet conditions soil type etc: so take all that into consideration before buying that big of a unit.Larry:D

Thanks guys.

I'm new to this, and didn't realize that tillers have slip clutches built in. I have checked the equipment ratings for this tractor, and they say it can handle a 72" tiller. I may go the way of a cultivator if a used tiller is to difficult to come by for a decent buck. I was looking at an upcoming auction close by, there is a tiller there.
