Had to take the TC33D in for repair the other day. The PTO would slip out of gear when under load. I tried to lengthen the push rod but that did not help. I checked to make sure that the levers were not bent. All was good. The shop tore into it and found that the gears were completely chewed up. They concluded that the gear was only going in about a quarter of the way and not meshing completely. Well I was into my third year of warranty and the parts were covered execpt for the oil and filters. Thats when they told me to block the clutch open during the winter time to stop it from sticking. This helps the gears to fully seat when the PTO lever is engaged. So in the process of working that issue out.

My TC30 manual tells you to do just that, block the clutch open. They even have a diagram on how to do it. Just shove a block of wood underneeth the floorboard between it and clutch arm. Simple and saves the tractor. I had never thought of doing something like that, but it makes sense to me.

Hi All,
Long time no hear.
I've been searching the last 1/2 hr to find threads on difficulty engaging and disengaging my rear PTO (Class II).

There's been something common in all the threads. The linkage length. I remember one time last summer where it was very hard to engage. I pushed hard and thought I felt the linkage flex. After reading this thread I think I actually bent the linkage. Now it's not going to full stroke which would answer why it slips out under a heavy load.

I can't confirm until I disconnect the linkage and see how easy the sleeve moves back and forth. This would be a heck of a warranty to have to cover for NH because the linkage binds and when bent won't let the gears mesh 100% until they have to be replaced...... Hope I caught it fast enough.
Anyone care to comment.....?

Interesting subject as I currently have my TC29D in the NH shop right now, in part for a PTO engagement/disengagement problem which I've had since last Fall. I don't recall reading anything in my manual about blocking the clutch open. It's a live independent pto. I kept thinking it was the external linkage but after adjusting that several times it really didn't solve the problem. The dealer was speculating it was the internal linkage that was binding. Haven't heard anything from him yet as to whether he's looked at this week. My problem really isn't the pto slipping out of gear though. In fact I was stalling the tractor once in awhile using a pto chipper (that was rated for the tractor and sold as part of the tractor purchase by my NH dealer). I learned that 4"~5" dia. oak were just too much for the tractor pto HP. So while my current problem may not be quite the same as what you've described, I'm leery that this could be a future pto problem.

Forgive my ignorance but how does blocking the clutch help ensure full gear engagement? Just by ensuring the clutch fully disengages (doesn't stick) which then allows free movement of the gears to fully mesh?
