PTO slipping out of gear

I have searched the archieves with no success - possibly not using the right search words. Anyway, I was using a rented Woods 72" power rake on my TC 33 and the PTO would keep popping out of gear. I would stop and re-engage and proceed again until it loaded up a bit and popped out of gear again.

As I had no owners manual yet, I thought this might be some type of safety feature to prevent damage. When I brought the power rake back to the dealer and described the situation, he offered that this should not have happened, but had no explanation. Before I trailer the tractor back to the dealer, I thought I would post to the group for experience and suggestions. Going into a dealer with a blank look might get expensive. Thank you. BTW - I have been a lurker and learned alot before I went shopping. The group is great and I now look forward to logging in each day to get more knowledge on my latest toy.

Go out to your tractor with it turned off. Grab the pto stub and see if there is in/out movement.

PTO brake may complicate this.. so.. get up on it.. engage pto ,.. but leave TRACTOR TURNED OFF.. NO ENGINE RUNNING>> NO PTO SPINNING.. now see if there is in/out movement ont he pto stub.

On older fords.. if the pto bearing wore.. it could allow in/out movement.. and this would vibrate the locking dog/splined coupler colalr back and let it pop out of gear. I'm sur ethere are many changes in the pto systems.. but int he end.. something is not keeping it engaged.. might be as simple as a ball and detent problem?
