My Mitsubishi D1600 has two shift levers and a Low-Med-High gear shift. So the previous owner gave me a few pointers on what speed he uses to mow, but how in the world do I figure out the actual PTO speed? If there were any stickers, they are long gone.

The PTO shift lever has 4 speeds. The transmission has 3 speeds and a reverse. And of course the Low-Med-High selector gives me 9 forward speeds. My tachometer works, but there are no pointers as to PTO speed versus RPM. Does anyone have a manual or sticker that might clue me in to obtaining the typical 540 RPM PTO speed that implements are supposed to use?

My D1850 has the same setup, use PTO 1 for 540 rpm. I'm 600 miles from the tractor right now so I can't look to confirm. but on mine there is a larger white block on the tachometer line just past the 2200 rpm reading (I think), that is to indicate 540 PTO rpm.

This is from a tractorbynet thread, I will note though that the MT160/MT180 numbers are wrong according to my Mitsubishi and I&T service manuals.


Standard PTO speed: 540 pto rpm/2,580 engine rpm (first)
1,000 pto rpm/1979 engine rpm (third)"

Buck is covered in same manual and is very similar to ST1450

2-752 rpm
3-997 rpm

Ok, well, I am such a noob that I thought that shifting the transmission gears would effect the PTO speed. So are you implying that itr won't matter which of the 9 forward speeds I shift into, that the PTO will only be effected by engine rpm and its gearshift lever?

And since my tractor seems to max out at around 2100 engine rpm, those PTO speeds are roughly the 2100 rpm speeds for my tractor? If so, here is my back-of-the-napkin calculations:

D1600 Estimates
PTO 1 = Gear reduction of 3.889
PTO 2 = Gear reduction of 2.789
PTO 3 = Gear reduction of 2.106
PTO 4 = Gear reduction of 1.638


So to get 540 rpm, here are my rough numbers:
  • PTO 1 = 2100 engine rpm
  • PTO 2 = 1506 engine rpm
  • PTO 3 = 1137 engine rpm
  • PTO 4 = 883 engine rpm

This may come in handy for tilling and the like. This old tractor doesn't creep well like newer ones do, so decreasing rpm makes sense to slow down engine speed to lower forward speed for some jobs. I can barely idle at 883 rpm, it sounds horrible below about 1200 with all the clanging. I sometimes drive a newer tractor with a digital speed gauge. I till with it at 0.25 mph, and I don't think this Mitsubishi goes that slow.

It is a combination of both.

It is a transmission; rpm is how fast it spins and the gear is the given ratio.

There are many 540 and 1000 rpm implements. Things like grain augers and conveyors would use a slower rpm, trash pumps and generators can be on the higher side.

Musing on that, that may only be correct when taking into account the gearing on my tiller.

Not sure that is right for my brush mower as I use a different rpm, and I think it is 540 as well... the BE manual is hard to find for it.

Well, the likelihood of running a 1000 rpm implement on a 16 to 20 horsepower tractor is vanishingly small. I'm not sure why you'd even mention a 1000 rpm attachment. There's just not any that I would hook up to a compact tractor like this with a Cat 0/Cat 1 three-point. So I'll stick to the 540 rpm implements in this discussion. Where I live, no one uses anything but 540 rpm.

What are you saying? I don't know what you are abbreviating and assuming that I know. I have never heard of a 2100 rpm PTO, so please start over.

Engine rpm + PTO gear position (or times ratio if you wish to use real math) = (gives) pto rotational speed

As I mentioned from another thread:
D1850 1-540*
2-752 rpm
3-997 rpm
4-1282 rpm

Are the pto speeds for your tractor at 2,580 engine rpm.

540 at PTO gear 2 for your tractor would be engine rpm 1,853.

When manuals give you PTO speeds, they only give you the speed at a single engine rpm.

This is either a skill testing question or supposedly to make it less confusing to the reader as there are two different rpm being referred to. Input (engine) and Output (PTO shaft).
