PTO Spins when Disengaged

When the pto is not engaged but is turning anyway try holding a piece of wood against it - you may well find that it stops easily - it is just being turned by oil viscosity - it is not really engaged.
The clicking might be more troublesome. Sometimes when gears have been damaged (a couple of broken teeth) they "click" as the bad part goes past. Has there been any kind of rotary mower incident ? I broke my pto gears in a tractor once when my 6 ft rotary tried to trim some rocks. Had to split the tractor and replace a couple gears.

I have determined that the PTO is fully engaged no matter what positiong the PTO lever is in. It will not stop when a block of wood is used to try and stop it (this is in disengaged lever position). It DOES stop when clutch is depressed.

Very good chance I jammed branches up under tractor. I pulled out quite a few. What am I looking for? Is linkage a cable between handle and where?

If there wasn't anything on the pto when it started, it's likely to be something simple - not broken teeth /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
On my rig the pto lever connects to a link that moves another lever further away - if the link got bent, it could push the pto shifter parts inside into a position to cause the clicking? I'd try disconnecting any linkage on the pto lever to see what difference it makes. Hope you have good luck.

YES YES YES. It is a kinked linkage cable. A large stick pushed
the end of the cable at the lower end and bent it over.
A new cable is required. It is hanging loose between the lever above and connection bellow. I wonder if someone can look under their tractor and tell me where it is supposed to attach to the fender or underside to keep it from swinging loose? Did it used to run in plastic clips along inside of fender?

Can't answer specifics as I am not a <font color="orange">Kubotanian </font>- my post was a generic reply for a problem that can happen to any color.

Here's the diagram from the shop manual. What it does not show you is where it attaches to the transmission, which is on the right side of the tranny, in a straight path curving down from the PTO control handle up by the seat, as I recall. It is spring-loaded, and it's a bear to attach. By the way, keeping the cable lubed is also a good idea... if it dries out, it can hang up and not work right... don't ask how I found this out!
Once you find the shaft and lever on the side of the transmission, you can manually push it to disengage the PTO so it's not constantly running. That way you can at least use your tractor for other chores until the cable is replaced.
Don't crawl under the beast until it's shut down and secured, of course!

Thank you. I traced it down. It is bent over right where it attaches to transmission. I assume if I order cable it will be what I need. As you say, when I straighten it up, my PTO stops. If I engage it again from the lever, I have to wait till I shut down to manually turn it off again. I will not use it till
I get the cable.
