I have a YM3000 and Sunday the PTO levers became very hard to move to engage thhe PTO. Saturday it seemed to work normally. There are no oil leaks and no abnormal noise when it's running. Is the transmission oil the same that circulates in the PTO housing? And is this regular hydraulic oil? If not, clue me in please.

It's all the same fluid, should be hy/tran, (hydraulic/transmission fluid= to JD303). You need to determine if the tightness in the lever is internal or external to the pto housing, (any free play in the lever?).

If you have something holding pressure on the pto shaft I soppose it may be hard to shift.

And deffinately transdraulic oil.. I hope you havn't been running straight hyd ( jack ) oil in it.

It was a little low on Hyd oil.....about 1 1/2 qts......Whatever oil that is in it was in it when I got it. When it's cold it shifts normally.....I got a manual yesterday and I'm gonna cahnge the Hyd oil and clean the screen.....I think that's all she needs. Thanks for the responses, I'm new at this tractor stuff.

"the PTO levers became very hard to move to engage thhe PTO."

I'm a little, (a lot), confused by this. Is there more than 1 pto lever? Is the lever/levers tight, or do the gears resist movement or clash when trying to shift? Does the trans shift ok, clutch adj., bent shift fork, gear galled on shaft? I'm no tractor expert, but I believe that pto Assembly operates just like a geared tranny, and the type or amount of fluid, as long as it is lubed, has little or no effect on it's operation. If it is internal to the pto, you will probably need to remove the pto assembly for a look-see.

It has 2 pto levers that are individually positioned differently depending on what gear you run the tractor in. This is to keep equipment running at normal and safe speeds. I have been able to determine that it is only hard to shift when a little low on fluid when I worked the tractor really hard pulling a disc harrow. I also learned(according to the manual) that this tractor and the 2500 were only built in 1977....It's hard to believe my tractor is that old. Sure don't look and run like it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
