I got in to clip pastures and the PTO switch is not working nor is the tachometer. Everything else seems to work, even the PTO light indicator on dashboard lights up.

I checked all fuses and all are good. Upon advice of the NH head mechanic I also replaced the pricey alternator but no luck. The local dealer is hurting for help and are weeks if not months out for an appointment so reaching out to the experts here.

Im guessing that the tachometer needs to work in order for the PTO to engage but don’t know which one is the issue here. Any thoughts?

First off, that was some bad advice from a head mechanic. Why would you suggest parts without troubleshooting?

How are you checking the fuses? Looking at them is not the best method. I like using a test light.

I would also use the test light and check the connectors going to the PTO solenoid.

It is true that the tach and PTO work off of the alternator, but as K5lwq said, check the cheaper, simpler components first. Could also be a relay problem that is downstream from PTO light. Light may work off of switch only, but not off of the downstream circuit of the solenoid.

I will go back and use a continuity tester to verify the fuse. Good advice for sure.

I think it’s a relay problem too but looking at the fuse/relay diagram in the service manual I only see a 5 amp fuse for the PTO but not a relay identified for it. I would think something that big would need the power of a relay to fire off.

For reference, it’s a cab tractor with shuttle shift but not electronic lift.
