If you had a choice between the 2 for L3400 price being about the same which type would you prefer and why?
Thanks for any input. Chuck.

Y'know, I doubt it makes a darn bit of difference to the hoe as long as your tractor's pump puts out as much volume and pressure as an external pump. On my tractor / backhoe I need the PTO pump - my tractor's doesn't have the oomph. But all that is really happening is that I'm adding another hydraulic pump to the engine...

Chuck, check out the discussions in the Mahindra section. Many of us that have Mahindra tractors have been discussing that exact issue. There is a real recent post on it, but some older ones as well. The bh with the Mahindra name on them are made by Bradco, which from what I have seen by far makes the best bh in this class.
I think you will find that it comes down to matching the hoe with the correct amount of fluid and flow rate, and how you feel about opening up you tractor hyd to external potential contamination.
I have a New Holland bh and the Bradco on the Mahindra which both run off tractor hyd and they work fine. If I was using them daily, I would think a pto set up would make more sense.

Most ag tractors don't have enough hydraulic flow to operate a BH at rated speeds. It's not uncommon to have the boom, dipper, bucket and swing cylinders going all at the same time. That takes a LOT of hydraulic flow to fill 4 cylinders! A PTO pump usually will have the correct flow to operate the BH.

The extra cost of the PTO pump is offset by the cost of adding rear ports, should you not already have them.

I would probably go for the PTO version, unless the tractor already had rear hyd output. Even then, I'd check the flow - the L3400 may only have 5-7 gpm available - part of the flow goes to the steering and is not useable.

jb, your are referring to power beyond, I think instead of rear remotes?

Either can be used for powering a hoe. People often use the rear remotes if they have them as the lines are already run and controls are in place. But, your right - it's more common to plumb from a loader control valve that has power beyond capability.

Really appreciate all the input, could some one please tell me what is power beyond? Thanks again.

Chuck,

Power beyond refers to hydraulic fluid continuously flowing from your resevoir through a pump to your FEL, then out of the FEL to the BH and then out of the BH back into the resevoir, or possibly the 3pt and then the resevoir. This flow will happen continuously while the tractor engine is running, regardless of whether or not you are operating the FEL, BH or 3pt. The FEL's, BH's and 3pt lifts are built expecting this continuous hydraulic flow to pass through them, whether in use or not.

If you were to power your BH from rear remotes, they would have to be set up so the hyd fluid was always flowing through the remote when you wanted to operate the BH, either with something holding the valve open or having a valve that would remain open. Each BH requires a certain amount of flow (e.g., 9 gpm) as well as pressure. Depending upon your tractor's capabilities you may need to use a PTO pump rather than the tractor's hyd system to meet the minimum flow requirements.

For most any hydraulic question you could think of, please search posts by "MadReferee". He was our TBN resident expert and his threads and posts still exist for us, eventhough he's no longer with us. He had a unique capability of helping everyone, especially when the subject dealt with hydraulics.

The L3400 supplies 6.3GPM to the implements. The power steering
flow is not subtracted from that amount, according to the Kubota
specs.

The L3400 is reasonably well matched to the BH75 hoe using the
tractor's hydraulics. I have run that setup and it does fine, even at
less than rated RPM. My old L2500DT was very similar and it ran
my Prairie Dog 7.5 plenty fast and that tractor DID steal PS hyd flow
from the implement pump. The L3400 is better.

We are not talking 9ft to 11ft hoes here. They are too big for the
L3400.

Do they mount to the tractor differently?
