PTO will not engage (Branson 4020)

I cannot get the PTO to engage. the lever seems to be working but I have to hold the clutch in and have someone put a cresent wrench and engage it to 540 then it stays engaged all the time. Does anyone have an ideal. I tried to adjust the clutch but that wasn't the problem. Before this happen it seemed like it would grind into PTO and now this.

does your tractor have a pto switch to the left of the steering colum ?

I assume by PTO switch you are referring to the PTO lever. No it is directly under the seat and it operates up 1000 rpm and down 540 rpm and in the middle out of gear.

my branson is a 2009 3510i,10 and 20 series areset up the same. yours may be different if it is older,but it could be simmiler. the tractor clutch is a dry type,single stage and the pto has a separate clutch controled by a hydrolic valve that is controled by an electrical switch that is on the top of the clutch lincage. you may have a bad switch, a switch out of adjustment, or a bad(or stuck )hydrolic valve. i hope this helps you.please let us know how you make out.

It turned out to be the actual lever going into the transmission. I removed the left wheel and jacked up the tractor. I then disconneced the linkage that connected the PTO lever to the shaft coming out of the transmission. I then used penetration oil and WD40 and sprayed the shaft and gently taped it with a hammer and the took a wrentch and started it to turn and then loosened it up and it now works. Thanks for all the help.
