PTO won\'t engage

After owning my 4210 for three years I finally needed to use the PTO for the newly aquired backhoe. I pulled the PTO knob up as per instructions, the PTO light on the dash lit but the PTO didn't engage /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.
I drove 70 miles roundtrip to the JD dealer, spoke to the Service Mgr who said it could be a solenoid, wires loose under the transmission or the transmission itself. At that point, I went to the parts counter to buy a repair manual....$180 with 7-10 days for delivery. Nothing's easy...

Can anyone help with a diagram of the wiring and/or the internal part in the transmission that may/or may not be broken????

Re: PTO won\'t engage

Do you have a front PTO as well? Could you have the lever set to actuate the front PTO? I'm often putting the selection lever in the front position so the rear PTO shaft will free wheel to allow me to put the PTO shaft onto the rear a bit easier and then forget when I pull up the PTO engagement button. I immediately know where to look now.

You could have ordered the repair manual on CD by phone.

Re: PTO won\'t engage

By far the most likely suspect is the pto solenoid. It is on the transmissions right side, about 10 inches behind the travel pedals (assuming hydro...)

The wires can get snagged and pulled off the solenoid.

If you need a diagram or two, pm me with your email address...

Re: PTO won\'t engage

Ralph, I do not have a front PTO. Do you have the phone number to order the CD manual?

Rocky I looked underneath and didn't see any loose, disconnected or broken wires. I even checked the mini fuses which are good.

Underneath the floor board, there's a metal rectangular box that's 2"wide x 5"long x 1-1/4"thick. It has two hard lines (hydraulic?) on each end and has what appears to be a wired solenoid attached on top. Would that be the solenoid that engages the PTO? How do I remove that solenoid to check if it's good or not? Is it screwed in or does it "lift" off?
If it is good, what's the next thing to check for??

Thanks to both for your replies.
