Tractor
1600 diesel ford
Would someone care to comment on why the PTO shaft on my diesel Ford 1600 turns all the time at a very low RPM.
I've shifted the PTO lever off and on and the shaft still turns though at a speed not related to the engine speed.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

not to familar with that tractor but i would think that once the pto i disengaged IT SHOULD be disengaged. should not be turning at all. might ther be an adjustment on the pto lever. looks like it is allowing the pto to move when it shoud not be. have u checked with a dealer? they may have a simple soultion, know it is not much help but best i can do.

Larry, what does the PTO do when you have something attached like a rotary cutter? Does it rotate when it's disengaged, but only when there is nothing attached? With the PTO disengaged, put something like a shovel handle against the PTO to see if it is easily stopped (Please don't use your bare hand for this test.). I think you just might have some slight mechanical rubbing that's causing your PTO to turn. It might even be a PTO clutch. If the shaft stops when you touch it with something, I wouldn't worry about it. Most Fords have a cover over the PTO. If you are missing one, maybe you should order one to ensure nothing gets wrapped onto the PTO when it's not in use.

My JD 1050 does this as well. Best I can determine it's just oil swooshing around inside the trans that causes it to turn. I stopped it once with a shovel handle and I could feel the oil pulsing.

I was told the same thing when i went to look at a large ford agg tractor.. the pto was an independent style.. and when disengaged, circulating oil in the tranny would make the shaft freewheel... the 15' rotary cutter hooked up though.. it was rock solid not moving untill the pto was engaged..
May or may not be your case.

good luck

I will try to make it stop by putting something against it as you suggest. It will NOT be my hand, as you also suggested. We'll see what that does. Quite frankly I don't know what it does when an implement is attached since this behavior began AFTER the last time I used my brush hog. I never noticed it happening prior to that. I'd not have noticed it now had I not turned around to check progress of spreading manure and just happened to see the hitch pin loose. Then noticed the shaft turning. I'll post again after I try your idea. And thank you.

I'm sure you would have noticed if it was doing this earlier. I would think it would make hooking up implements more difficult with a moving shaft.

You mean we don't all hook up the pto shaft with the engine off and the ignition key in our pockets? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I admit the key is not ever in my pocket, but the engine is always off...

well, er, uhm....yeah, I suppose you' re right. No, if the tractor isn't moving, the shaft isn't turning. Right.
So I suppose I would have noticed it, huh? When I attach anything it isn't moving. Correct.
And to make matters worse, it only does it when the blooming thing is in two wheel, not 4WD.....maybe a call/visit to a dealer IS in order, huh?
Thank you!

Soundguy, the independent hyd Ford pto's use hyd pressure to engage & disengage the pto clutch. When it is diengaged, the hyd pressure clamps a brake on the pto so it doesn't turn.

First symptom of hyd problems on these tractors is the pto spinning when at idle, as the brake uses very low pressure.

Second symptom is that the pto does not engage until you get off idle. The clutch pack takes moderate oil pressure.

Now, the actual_ problem could be a weak hyd pump, or a leak anywhere in they hyd system - at the pto, or at the hyds innerds.

Note this is only for the bigger Ford tractors - 7700, TW series, etc.

On the little 1600/ 1700 etc series, I thought they have mechanical 2-stage clutch. Something is probably dragging on the clutch plate, that last message about being in 2 wheel vs 4 wheel is the clue. Bet something (shim or washer or etc.) is worn and allowing drag.
