Iseki TX1510
As a very cautious newbie seeking more advice on PTO's etc. I have an Iseki TX1510 (Non Live PTO) and currently just a Rotavator which thanks to forum member is identified as a 4' King Kutter 2 Rotary Tiller (albeit perhaps branded under another name)The tiller manual states that all tractors not running a live pto need to have a PTO Overrunning Clutch. Some opinions say for a Rotavator that is not necessary. Any experience/comments would be welcome before I spend any more
money albeit I'm very safety concious !!! As regards the actual PTO shaft do these all come with shear bolt(s) as standard on the joints ? If not would these be an alternative to the overrun clutch or should I have these anyway?

Any advice gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance

There is a diversity of opinion and some long threads on slip clutch vs shear bolt, so it's often a personal preference and sometimes different terrain may make one preferable over the other. I prefer a slip clutch for convenience and my brother prefers shear bolt for cost. A slip clutch requires more maintenance.

I prefer an over running clutch on every tractor. There are things you "can" get away with and running a tiller without an over running clutch may be one, I just prefer not to.

a tiller? IMHO..you don't need a ORC fro a tiller. 1, it's not alot of rotational mass.. 2, you are usually going about .2mph using a tiller.. :)

now.. a slip clutch.. SURE.. I'd deffinately use good torque limting on a tiller. shear bolt is ok.. but slip clutch is beter..

something with alot of rotary inertia.. like a brush mower is when you want an ORC... etc..

Thanks to all for your replies. Just reading the manual for the tiller it mentions a slip clutch on the PTO diagram page ......or is that something completely different? I'm assuming of course that the PTO shaft is the same as that in the manual!!

Some Manuals are not good at pointing out (if equipped) a lot are offered either with a shear pin or slip clutch and don't print separate manuals, you will be able to tell just by looking at the shaft. You can download a Land Pride manual or other brand and there will be a picture to use for reference.

slip clutches are torque limiting devices.

Over running couplers ( ORC ) are 1-way ratcheting dog clutches and only transmit power in direction.

they are not the same.. and have different purposes. one is to prevent drivetrain backfeed from a spinning inertial implement ( mower, thus ORC ).. and the other is to prevent drivetrain damage from hitting a n obstacle with a pto powered implement ( slip clutch )

depends. most add on slip clutches are attached right at the gearbox imput ont he implement. however on some setup, you can see a slip clutch at the tractor end of the pto shaft. all depends on setup. for implenents with a single gearbox.. I'd say it is common at the gearbox.. for multip gear boxed implements.. then ont he tractor end of the pto shaft.. etc.
