Is there a minimum hp cadet that will handle a pull cart? I'm considering the 1042 on the lighter side. the 2542 on the heavy side. would appreciate your experience if you use this setup. include how heavy a load, your model #, type of terrain. all information will be helpful. thanks

No, there is no minimum; they will all pull a cart. BUT what do you intend to load the cart with?

If you have level ground and plan to use a small cart to pull mulch, or other relatively light stuff such as a dethatcher, spike aerator (and perhaps a very infrequent heavier load) then the 1042 should suit your needs fine.

If you plan to pull heavier objects on a somewhat routine basis (more than a couple times per year) and use things like a plug aerator, have uneven terrain, etc. then consider the 2542.

In any case, both are good machines for their intended purposes. If you have the extra $, go with the 2542 (or consider the 2544 for the deeper deck (yeah it is 2" wider, but it is also a LOT deeper). It is quite a bit more tractor.

Also, I forgot to mention that "generally" I believe Cub recommends that you tow no more than 1/2 the tractor's weight. I believe the 1042 weights about 500 lbs. and the 2544 weighs about 800 lbs.

Good luck!

My 2544 will pull until the wheels dig themselves into the ground. The problem with a heavy cart is stopping. You cant stop a lot of weight with a LT or GT and will wind up with the cart ahead of the donkey REAL easy if the terrain gets dicey. Ideally, you go by what Kirt says, half the units weight.

I've used my 1042 pulling a 17 cu. with around 6-700 lbs of stone and stuff without a problem....would i recommend doing it all the time ...no... but so far no major problems...

the only problem i've encountered so far within 20hrs is the reverse safety switch will shut off when i wiggle the key left/right a little and that stupid skid plate thing under the front of my deck..

bent that right down.. but was my fault...sidewalk had a edge that was high and i didnt see it when i backed up...caught the lip and bent it downwards..hopefully its covered under warranty
