I got this Yanmar tiller from my fathers farm. It had been sitting in the weeds for about 20 years. It appears from the ID plate to be a YHT 60 chain drive. I greased it up and topped off the oil bath and it worked fine. Used it to till up my back yard to reseed. It's missing the rear hinged baffle, but it works fine without it. The only problem I have is the bearing race on the right side is missing the cover. There was nothing left in place so I don't know what should be covering it. The bearings are exposed so I have to frequently pack them by hand. I need to find a cover for it if anyone knows where to get parts. You'll notice half of the tines are missing on the left side. When my father bought it new, he removed the tines on one side and cut the mounting plates off so he could till the rows between his strawberry beds. Does anyone know if it would be easier to buy a whole new bar with tines or just weld some replacement tines back on. I could fabricate a mounting plate for the new tines.

I would be interested in where to buy replacement tines at a reasonable cost? Ken Sweet

Looking at your picture I don't see why you couldn't cut a round plate to fit over your bearing. Looks like bearing is flush with housing. You could drill and tap it for a grease fitting. Can the 3 bolts be removed and then put back thru cover and all? Can't tell just what that is at about 10 o'clock. If your a fabricator no doubt you could save money by fabricating new plates to fasten your tines too. Looks to me like you will probably have to make them in two pieces and weld them together over the shaft. Is that bearing pretty rough or is that just an illusion in the picture?

This thread has a picture of a similar bearing cover. Scroll down to post #15.

I'm not convinced it is cost-effective to put tines back on. Do you have the old tines? It might be cheaper to start with another tiller.

At 10 o'clock is the grease fitting. It does work and pumps the grease into the bearing race. But without the cover, the grease just works it's way back out and does no good. The bearing is pretty close to being flush. I was thinking of making some type of cup to bolt over the bearing to retain the grease and afix it to the side with a gasket in between. And yeah, that is no illusion. The bearing is pretty rough, but still spins fairly smooth. Was going to try and find an easy fix for the missing cover before I spend any time/money on adding the missing tines.

Why not replace the bearing with a sealed bearing and just put a flat cover over it to protect the bearing from damage and then you do not have to worry about keeping dirt out of the grease.
