I traded for a 336D with a FEL yesterday. It is supposed to be about a 1986 model. The hour meter showes 1050 hrs and wasn't working when the po first got it. The story is the po was brush hogging last summer and overheated the tractor. He came to the barn and let it cool off then refilled it with water/antifreeze and went back to brush hogging. The tractor was low on power so he parked it. The next morning it won't turn over.

Also the 4x4 never worked while the po had it. Lever felt like it was going into/out of gear when moved.

When I checked it out there didn't show to be water/antifreeze in the oil but, the oil was over full a bit which to me was indicating water was there. It still wouldn't turn over. The started engaged and sounded like it was pulling a load.

We hauled it home today and started the tear down expecting to find a cylinder full of antifreeze. There was no obvious antifreeze in the oil. When the head came off there was only the bit of antifreeze that spilled out of the passages. All the cylinders looked fine and they all looked the same.

Battery charger on the battery and it still won't turn over with the head off so I pulled the oil pan. There was about 1/2 cup of new looking antifreeze in the pan. It could have went in there when we pulled the head, I can't be sure either way. I did try turning the motor with a socket on the balancer bolt but no luck there. I did have the tractor in neutral.

Just looking at the bottom of the engine with the pan off everything looks like new. No tarnish, build up or gunk. There was a 1/4 inch of gunk stuck to the top side of the pan. It looked like 1/4 inch of oily grease. The oil pickup tube looked new and the mesh was clean.

I pulled the rear rod cap off and the rod bearing looks like new. No grit, streaks or significant wear. At this point I ran out of time so I thought I would post up to this point.

Next to do look at the front two rod bearings and then I guess pull the motor and look at the mains. Open for suggestions/ideas ect.

I had to pull the drive shaft to the front end, in doing so I learned the front pinion is worn out to where I can easily turn it by hand so now I know why the 4x4 doesn't work. I read about the front ends losing oil on here.

I am currently reading up on 336D rebuilds including Domushs' and I have already learned a lot, Thanks to everyone who has been posting these up!!

Pic's are coming.

I would guess you have at least one piston stuck. Probably take rod caps off to find how many. Might soak them with penetrating oil if you haven't.

Are we sure the clutch is not stuck over the years? That would not explain the PO issue with it being stuck and not doing anything?

I had a few minutes to look over the cylinders and it looks like #1 and #2 have problems. #3 is too far up in the cylinder to tell much. Hopefully we can pull the pistons this Sunday and see.

Here is a of pic of one the cylinders.

And head.

I do plan on getting the head surfaced.

I didn't mention it in the first post but I gave this tractor to my son just for being a great guy. He is pretty excited about it. When we get the motor running I am considering a quick hitch for the rear and changing the FEL to SSQA. Maybe a 3rd function later on.

Here is a pic of the tractor torn down. FEL is outside.

Looks like we are going to need a ring and pinion for the front end. Anyone know where to get a R/P? Seems they are scarce.

Looking at the axle attachment to the frame it looks simple enough to switch the whole front axle out even to a different model. Anyone know of a model that will work or the diff ratio of this front end?

Off to search, thanks in advance!!

Honestly I don't think that cylinder looks bad enough to be seized up. Not sure on the other's. Scoring of some type. Broken rings?

Did you call hoye and ask about a used one? They have hundreds of parts tractors and ones disassembled already

Thanks for the leads, we will follow them up! The current plan is to get the motor running then we will address the front r/p. It looks like there are quite a few salvage tractors around in similar models plus the listed source for a r/p.

We did get the rest of the motor apart and found the problem. #2 cam bearing was seized. #2 piston/cylinder were scored to the point they are probably ruined. Crank spins properly after taking the cam out.

We are calling around to find someone to regrind the camshaft then we should be in business!

I'm sure you will check the oil pump closely before putting back together.
