Our local yokel county commissioners have proposed raising property tax rates yet again. Rather than sitting around whining, I decided to do something about it. I wrote letters to the local papers and got published two days in a row. I emailed my county commissioner. I made up flyers and passed them out all around my community today. I stopped and talked with every person I saw out in their yard, and not one of them was even aware of what their local government was up to. I will load up my vehicle and carry as many neighbors as will fit to the public hearing Tuesday night. In the mean-time I will tell everyone I see and ask them to come to the hearing too.

I am sick and tired of these government officials spending beyond all budgets and then coming to the taxpayer for even more money to spend.

If you out-spend your family budget, you cannot go to your employer and assess yourself a pay increase because you spent too much money. So why do we allow the government to do it to us?

Or would it be more appropriate to say you're putting your mouth where your MONEY is at!?!?!?

Either way, good luck with your efforts. It's better to see someone getting involved, rather than just standing around, complaining "after the fact".

GO GET 'EM!

I think you explained the biggest problem with government. Spending tax dollars that they don't have and are'nt accoutable for.

When I was assigned to the State Department in the Marine Corps, I was the Supply NCO. All year we would only order what we needed, but in August, we would go crazy spending every dime available to us before the new fiscal year.

Everyone in government knows that if you haven't spend everything in your budget, you will get less money the next year. If you spend it all, then you can ask for more the following year.

Very true, and a crazy system, ain't it, Eddie? I'll never forget my first experience with budgeting for the City. I was a new sergeant and we really needed two additional clerk/typists because of some major changes in our paperwork required because of one of those "studies" by outside consultants. So I put that request in the budget request. The Captain said, "You know we're really in serious trouble if we don't get those two, and you know up the line, they'll be looking for something to cut, so we want to ask for four so when they cut it in half, we'll still get what we have to have." Then the Deputy Chief says, "They're really going to be looking for things to cut this year, so we want to change that request to six if we expect to get two." First thing I know, they sent me six people. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif True story. I didn't even have places for them all to sit and had to find other jobs for four of them.

Our town budget comes up for a vote every year. Last year, it was defeated and they came back with a larger budget. It passed! If it doesn't get through the first time, they send letters home with all the school children urging the parents to vote for the budget so the schools will benefit. This means higher wages for the people that work less than 180 days and some of them make more money than the two people that they ask to help pass the budget. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
