My wife wouldn't be around to run the machine or do the rigging but would ask what took so long

She's not quite comfortable enough to run the machine. I'll find some little project for her to practice on, but thankfully she's right there to give me a hand.

Yep doing that work by yourself is much more exercise, for me it is usually something like this.

pull up jump off, try to tie up,
(dang too short of chain walk back around & jump back on pull closer)

tie up, walk back around &jump back on
Start to back up, have chain fall off,
jump back off, walk back around and try to tie up again,
dang forgot to pull back closer, walk back & jump back on,
pull back up to tree jump back off, walk back around to front & tie back up
walk back around hop on back up & pull it lose
have tree top land on hood of tractor, jump back off to inspect damage
try to unhook only to find too much tension on chain, walk back around & hop back on
drive forward to loosen up chain, jump back off walk back around unhook tree so it wont scrape up hood any worse,
walk back around & jump back on seat & back up a few feet,
jump off again & walk back around to re-hook,
walk back around jump in seat & drag it to the burn pile,
dou realize it came un-hooked half way there
go back to where it came off, jump back off & re-hook tree again,
walk back around jump in seat & head back to burn pile
jump back off hit your knee on loader arm, fall into briars yelling like crazy man,
try to get up only to realize you are wrapped up by 1600 pickers,
wiggle and pry loose 800 of the briers and rip the rest lose trying to get free
hobble to the tree wiping off some of the blood and dirt from your clothing
un-hook chain from tree & hobble back around & hop back onto tractor,
push tree into pile & back up only to find the chain re-attached itself to tree and pulled it back out of the pile,
hop back off tractor, snagging boot lace on shifter & land flat on you face in mud,
come out of the coma try & get up to where the now indestructible boot lace is still hooked onto some linkage,
struggle for 10 minutes to get boot unhooked from linkage,
crawl thru the pickers on hands and knees to FEL to again unhook the tree,
crawl back up and climb onto tractor seat, set there 15 min trying to get your leg to be able to push the clutch in,
back out leave the tree setting 15 feet from the burn pile drive tractor back to the house
climb off tractor and crawl inside to lay down on couch
Realize you hear tractor is still running outside,
crawl back outside & turn off tractor,
head back to the couch,
have woman come in and ask WHAT have you done all day lay there!>?!? :D

Yep that is how it goes without help...

My wife sounds like yours, she wants to get out there and help. It does make it more fun. I am doing the same kind of thing and am shocked how little roots you have, did you dig around them first. The roots on my trees will go out and actually link into other trees, I wish I could yank them out like that, but those roots linking to the other trees can be pretty shallow, around 1 foot deep but they are also as thick as the trunk in many cases....it is just nutz.

But you are a lucky man to have her out there with you.

Spiker, Could not have written this better myself, funny but true.

The FUNNY part is pretty much every one of those things have happened to me at one point or another in last few years of owning a farm and tractor. People with new Hydrostats don't know the joy of having gear drive tractor with shifters dual high/low gear boxes brakes and clutch and plenty of stuff to actually catch a lace on...

It's more the species that I'm pulling out. The Cherry frankly isn't a very strong tree and it's shallow rooted. The Box Elder is also a weak tree. The buckthorn, well, none of that stuff was very big. Now the Briers, those can be nasty. Thankfully the big one got knocked over when I backed into it so half it's roots were already weakened. Still, I'm using a big skid steer and have tracks on so I'm now HP limited and not traction limited. Gotta love the Grouser tracks!
