Has anyone had experience with PVC fencing? I have had PVC siding on a home and it seemed to mold quickly. How does it hold up to weedeating, abuse (running into it with the lawn mower), fading, getting brittle, possible dog chewing? With my style house (colonial) this would give the perfect look. Is it expensive compared to chainlink? Thanks in advance.

There a couple of large estates which have the plastic fencing up in these parts, and the ownly bad thing I heard about them so far when the frost comes out of the ground.
The post raise up or tilt which puts a bow in the long rails but its a easy fix.
One home owner has browish fence and looks nice, and the other home has white and over the years it become blacken here and there.
Split rail or dowle or more common fencing, but in time they rotten if not treated.

Skipper,

Can't comment on price comparison with chain link, but I believe the link is more expensive. I put in the PVC fencing nearly 3 years ago and it has held up reasonably well. There were covenants in the neighborhood and it was a good style for the home. I have been told that it raises the value of the home. It is very expensive and you really have to be careful weedeating -- I took some chunks out of mine earlyon. There has been some shifting of posts, even though I put concrete in the post holes. For my application, it has worked well. Count on more cost than wood, but the look is good. Here in Iowa (humid), have not noticed any problem with mold or discoloration -- we're hot in summer, cold in winter. Purchased mine at Lowe's and did much of the work. It is VERY expensive to have someone else install it. Let me know if you need more info from my experience.

I did a check at Home Depot last Summer and I think it run's $4-$8 per running foot (or more) if my memory hasn't completely vacated my head. And this may be a conservative cost. It's become quite popular out here in the Foothills above Sacramento but I cannot speak for the longevity or mold issues. It does look good however.

Thanks everyone, I did check around on the internet and had some sticker shock. It is higher than expected- but everything always is for a poor boy. I would be doing the install myself. What I like about it is when your finished installing it, your finished-no painting, staining /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif! I think I will try it-maybe somebody will put it on sell (not!).

Did you put in 2, 3 or 4 rail? Do you think it would be strong enough for horse fencing? I have been considering pipe fence, but it has to be painted every few years. I like the idea of no maintenance.

I put in a two rail fence a couple of years ago. it looks nice but i wouldn't count on it to keep in cows or horses. I put a hot shot and bob wire fence behind it to keep out the cows...

Mine was a picket-style that covered about 400 feet on three sides of the backyard. They sell heavier posts and rails that are designed for horse enclosures and I've seen some on "horse properties" that look good and have not been reinforced with other types of fencing. I'm sure the larger posts/rails cost much more than the decorative fence I used. I did reinforce each post by doubling treated 2x4s and sliding the "post" over them for greater strength.

Funny story -- my wonderful Golden Retriver, Edgar, at 85 pounds and long body could step over this fence if he wanted to -- didn't have a problem until last year when it snowed so much that he simply walked out of the yard on a drift. At that point I put up a low voltage temporary elect. fence on temp poles that gently zapped him. Took it down a few weeks later and no further problems.

In any event, people who can afford it use the larger fence around here. It looks great and is low maintenance.
