To really see what's possible you should do a web search on Dr Gerald Bull and the HARP project. This was a project conducted back in the 60s to launch satellites by means of a large gun. Dr Gerald Bull was later believed to have helped the Iraqis with their Super Gun during the Gulf War - was supposed to have been capable of hitting Israel from Iraq.

Looks like this has now been picked up by another group with project SHARP.
There's also evidence that China has been developing their own super-gun.
By the way, Gerald Bull was believed to have been assassinated by the Mossad (Israeli secret police) for his role in the Iraqi Super Gun ... there's a fine line between enjoying the technical challenge and being a threat to national security in this game.
The arms technology that was transferred to South Africa was for a long range artillery piece - that can still outshoot most western pieces. It's bad news if you are still dropping shells 10 miles short of your enemy and they are hitting you!!

I understood the military has been working on a steam powered cannon. (Supposedly without much luck.) Harp project looks like one really big gun powder cannon.
I do know they've worked on just about every possible method for launching projectiles. I even saw plans for a tiny centrifugal BB gun, spun by an electric motor. (If it works for BB's, it'll work for bigger stuff.) Problem has been getting the acceleration to match that of gun powder and still pack it in a small space.
