Can someone please tell me the gear ratio (or practical range) of a right angle gearbox that is used on popular PTO 520 broadcast spreaders?

I've search here and the www. Found plenty of gearboxes but which ratio to use 1:1, 5:1, 1:5...?

Thanks

if you have a particular one in mid and are by a dealer, just give the pto input a full turn keeping track of the broadcast disc and you will be able to see what you get. the disc is 360'.. just figure out what percentage of it you are getting with each full pto shaft rotation, then do the math.

SoundGuy, Thanks for unraveling such a deep dark secret. :confused2: just hacking on ya_ I appreciate the feed back. My problem (besides me being a jerk) is that my nearest dealer is 125 mile round trip and I don't know anyone around here that has one I could look at.

But seriously, I thought somebody might know the ratio from a build or repair job... if you or somebody out there has one they could give a whirl and let me know the approximate ratio I would appreciate it.

I'm considering purchasing from a wide range of ratio choices on-line.

Thanks

SoundGuy,

I just noticed you have over 23,500 posts!

That would add up to tons of help.

I shouldn't be flipping you the least amount of crap.

It is essentially 1:1, but not. The spreader turns 1/4 more turn than the pto in about 20 turns. So in 80 turns of the PTO you would get 81 turns of the spreader. Thats on mine. Others may differ some , but it sounds like they aim at about 1:1. Probably slightly off to make it a hunting tooth gearbox.

I think most of the ones here are 1 to 1. Ive seen some geared up a bit more. I cant remember the mfg. but some that made some square bodied spreaders that used a set of pillow block bearings. They had the shaft that stuck down and they had a hydraulic return hose clamped to it and the other end had a splined adapter to the tractor and hadthe hose clamped to it. They worked realy well and were easy to fix with no shaft to wear out. Also a few of the larger cone spreader had them to.

Hey thanks guys.

I also like the hose drive idea: simple cheap and easy to fix 1:1. I suspect the right hose material would last quite a while. It would be pretty easy to keep a spare on hand too. If I go that route I will definitely post some results.

Time to visit McMaster-Carr for some hose and hardware research.

I had a hose drive style.. ok for smaller units.. but you wouldn't really want it on a large model.

Mine is a magrix spreader.. will count it's revs tonight.. it's on the back of my ford 660 right now..

I have been looking at the herd spreader, 1200c and the 750 and the gear ratio or the gear in the gear box, are 14 tooth and 19 tooth, on 540 I think that comes out to, 732 rpm and on the thousand PTO the gears are reversed, and if my math is right it is 736 rpm,
540 540 RPM Gearbox Parts from Herd Seeder
1000 Herd 1000 RPM Gearbox Parts

I think many are 1 to 1 ratio tho. on the smaller ones, I had some of the part lists down loaded and my recall is the gears were the same,

land pride have the same illustration and number for both gears,
