Question About Diesel vs Gas Motor For ATV Flail Mower

Hey guys, so my father and I recently purchased a piece of property. There is a field on it that right now has about 6ft high grass. It's about 7 acres.

Some of the field has some mushy spots. We have been doing a ton of searching and decided that the best options to mow this right now would be to use a flail mower we can hook onto our ATV.

We'd love to buy US but they don't make it so we've been checking out Alibaba. They have models there, one we can get with a Diesel 11HP (not sure the torque) with electric start or a 22 HP Gas Lifan motor with I think 32ft/lbs at 3k RPM.

I don't have much experience with small motors and was looking for some advice. We want something that will last, and be powerful enough to chop up what we throw at it.

If you don't have a tractor that can shred it, I'd hire it out and maintain it from here on out. Once it gets cut, it'll have a chance to dry out. Also, with it being so thick and tall, there's a good chance that it'll support a smaller lighter tractor to mow it.

The state has water being diverted onto the property, which is something we had to get a lawyer for because there was no prior approval from any owners.

So we're dealing with a field with some wet spots. We live near a farmer he said he would be afraid he'd get stuck.

It wasn't but I didn't know if there would be a huge difference, I guess something extremely heavy might not be as good, but yea I guess weight would be something to consider, but if it's 100lb difference or something like that it wouldn't be that bad.

Check Craigslist. There's always some guys wanting to make a little extra money mowing. They will have much smaller equipment than the farmers usually run. Worth giving them a call. 7acres isn't much to mow so hopefully won't cost much

How much do the flail mowers you're considering weigh. Good chance they can get stuck too.

Seems around here, around $50/acre is the going rate.

I think it weight around 660lbs.

My dad is set on being able to cut it ourselves. That's why this seems like an attractive option. It's high now 6ft but after we cut it once we 'll never let it get that long.
