This is a dumb question but i need a little info. I have a JD 5103 w/3pt hitch. I also have a 6' rotary cutter and 6' box blade I use frequently.

A buddy of mine is wanting me to plant about 5 acres for him and he has a disk but no tractor. He makes it sound like it has a "typical" 3pt hookup, but also says there is another "hitch" that utilizes a very large pin (maybe 1 1/4"?) he's not sure. Is this a sleeve hitch and is it required or can I just use the 3pt?

Sorry if this is a totally ignorant question but I haven't been around the business end of tractors very long.

Thanks,
David

I agree, I myself have not seen the disk or pictures.

How many different configurations could there be? All I know is I think it is fairly old but not sure how old. I'm planning on hauling it out to his ranch this weekend and was hoping to make sure It's compatable and don't need anything before I do.

He is is probably referring to the top link as opposed to the two side linkages...

The pin for the top link is much bigger than the two side links, b/c on the 3pt the 2 you attach to your arms are just hitch pins from the implement, and the top link requires you to have your top link, and a bigger pin to go through it.

There are only 2 types, pull and 3pt...there are different categories, but same principal...Some people modify to quick hitch style, but thats a modification and not a standard by any means.

I am betting 10 to 1 he is referring to the top link.

You'd need to describe the disk (aka disk-harrow - you said disk-plow, but that is a much heavier implement - you didn't mean that did you?) more to get an idea of what it is. Is it an old thing, or a newer thing?

The old Allis Chalmers tractors had a hook-up that competed with the 3pt, it had one big ring on the implement that hooked up under the rear axle of the tractor, and had 2 pins that sorta looked like a 3pt but were back to the implement & up higher that hooked to short arms on the tracor. This was unique to AC. The implement would likely be AC orange in color, and older.

As the Fast Hitch others mentioned was unique to IHC back in the day.

I believe you are correct. I think it is a disk harrow but have only seen it once from a distance. It certainly wasn't a "heavy" implement. All I really know is he said it has a 3pt hookup but also this other large pin.

I guess I will find out when I get there.

About all you can do is have a set of hitch pins, bushings and wrenches to change them with you when going out there, Lots of variables good luck.

As it turned out it was not a 3pt but rather a pull type disk harrow. I just attached it to my drawbar. The angle of the disks adjusted by pulling a lever and either backing up or driving forward to set the desired angle then releasing the lever to lock it in place. It had two sets of maybe 5 disks across then behind that was another row of the same. That was my first experience with a harrow and pretty cool. The ground had not been worked in years and had low grass/weeds growing. I set the angle for the most aggressive and my first pass didn't look like it did a whole lot, like it needed more weight. So I ended up going over it probably and average of 3 passes and it was looking good.

Then I left the harrow on and attached the spreader to my 3pt and spread oats over the 5 or 6 acres. Once all the seed had been spread I made another pass with the harrow.

So now I want one for my place but really and would like to find a good used one. My JD 5103 pulled my buddies with no problem. So what is better, I noticed the newer ones appear to all be 3pt. I don't need to transport it and if I did I'll put in on a trailer. Are the pull types better?

And what width vs. horsepower is appropriate...and what should used price range be? I'm in the same boat with trying to restore some overgrown old field. I'm getting rid of the trees now, but will want to rework the surface in next year. Disks sound like what I should use (?).
