question about number 2 fuel oil

Are diesel and number two fuel oil equivalent? What I want to do, since taxed road diesel is now cheaper than dyed untaxed off-road fuel, is pick it up myself. I would fill up a 5 gal. container at the gas station, and empty into my heating oil tank. So are they equivalent for that purpose? I am looking for knowledge, more than opinion.

Nowadays, diesel doesn't have much lubricity left in it, but home heating oil has even less. If you are determined to use it in a diesel engine, be sure to add a lubricating agent and biocide to it.

its the same stuff , just different color for tax purposes. I often go to the indian reservation where diesel is cheaper than #2 fuel oil and buy it for the home furnace.

This was a good answer. That is what I decided to do. I am going to close my account with my current delivery company. I also paid $3000 to have a good quality wood burning stove installed. I will recoup the cost in two years.

Of course I did research on the internet but there are a lot of conflicting opinions, as on many topics. I'm satisfied that for the purpose of burning it for heat, number two fuel oil and diesel are equivalent. It would depend on what exact fuel you can get from a local supplier.

Agreed, if the untaxed/dyed is costing more, it is due to being old stock from before the price drop. The price is the same for both, road use adds taxes to the cost.

Where I live taxed road diesel is MORE expensive than what we call farm fuel, the purple stuff. Farm fuel is about $.45 less per gallon.

I had no problem using the 275 gallons of heating oil that in my tractor that was left after I switched to a geo heat pump. It was even dyed red like off road diesel.
