i was at the tractor supply store (big R) to try and get a longer extension to my PTO shaft for the wood chipper. A total new longer shaft runs about $250 incl the new u joints. and i cut it to fit.

As an alternative they have an overriding clutch assembly that would effectively lengthen my PTO shaft by 6" and allow me to use my existing PTO drive shaft for the chipper. I know i don't need an overriding clutch in this modern tractor, but my question is....would it hurt to use it.

That part only costs about $75.00 and then i wont have to fiddle with the other drive shafts that i haven't even checked on yet. I didn't realize that there would be this difference in the hook-up lengths between the JD and the new Kioti.

I don't see how it could. It operates while the PTO is in operation & should stop when the PTO stops

With the modern tractor, when you turn the PTO off, an implement such as a rotary cutter continues to coast a little bit, but the PTO itself tends to slow it down. I think some tractors even have a PTO brake that slows things quicker. With the overrunning clutch, when you turn off the PTO, a rotary cutter will probably coast longer, but I don't see that as a problem myself.

You can purchase a pto extender for around $25.00. It would do the same thing as the over running clutch to extend the shaft length.

Extension Adapter - 0271033 | Tractor Supply Company

I have seen the pto extenders, but you have to drill and pin them into the shaft. The extender is easily removable with a push pin like a pto shaft. I'm kinda leery of permanently affixing the extender.

Don't get me wrong, I use an over running clutch on my tractor. I use it because I need to on my old B7100. The over running clutch seems very sloppy and I know I have read posts about people having trouble with them coming apart. I bought mine from Hoye Tractor and It has worked good for 2 years now. I just would not add one if I did not need to. How about a slip clutch? Not sloppy like the over running clutch and it will help to protect your equipment.

Have a Bearcat chipper and use it on a MF35. I did buy a overrunning clutch to put on the Kubota L3130GST as it has a hydraulic independent PTO and did not want to wear out the PTO brake as the chipper has a large rotor.
