John Deere 4510
It is time for me to change the oil in my 4510 (along with the other items for the 50 hr service). I was wondering: can I get oil filters (and other parts) for it somewhere other than my John Deere dealer. I feel like the JD parts will be more expensive than other places. I was also considering running Rotella in it. I run it in my Power Stroke and thought it would be OK. Does anyone else use it?

Like I said, I was just curious if I could find the same quality parts somewhere cheaper than what JD might charge.

Thanks for the input.

I dunno JD's pricing, but any parts store that has HD filters in stock is likely to have em or can order them.

Do not fear voiding of warranty, by fed. law they have to honor it no matter brand of filter. They can't specify brand unless they give them to you free.

I run Wix as I get them local. Napa Gold or Carquest (silver box) would be the same filters. AC delco or Fleetguard are also good and plentiful.

I have run rotella for years without a problem in my trucks and tractors. I've been using Delo 400 chevron lately as the bottle is easier to pour. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I don't find Deere parts much different in price. I'll stick with the Deere, as changing oil doesn't happen that often. I trust the Deere more. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I use Wix filters and Rotella is well suited for this application. I have found a definite price advantage by using aftermarket filters.

Try these guys: www.filter1.com

I have a Fram filter from wally world in my gator. I needed 2 only had 1 at the time.

I do an annual bulk buy of filters and the gator was a mid cycle addition.

Another option is the Spring sale days at local Co-op, dealers etc. Around me they usually discount 10-15%.

The on-line source still beats the local discounts and is way more convenient on filters.

For other wear parts I recommend the dealer. You can order them online at www.jdparts.com for pickup or shipment. My JD dealer is fairly large and he always carries inventory. I refurbished a 1970 JD140 lawnmower and he stocked all the parts I needed.

The only parts he needed to order over the past several years was an exhaust pipe for a 1948 JD A and this year a cast part for a 1950's cultivator. The parts counter man knew what the broken casting part was for... I knew what it was only because I posted a pix on the ytmag site asking for advice last year when I broke it.

When I picked up the casting I wandered thru the shop & saw a JD7820 tractor engine dismembered. It had eaten a valve at 1900 hours and was in under warranty repair. The owner had simply traded for a new one rather than be down.

The dealer mechanics were also very helpful troubleshooting when I first bought an old JD dozer.

For oil I tried Rotella in my diesel 1 ton and it burned about a quart per tank of fuel. Same story with a diesel lawnmower. Since then I use the cheaper 2 & 5 gallon pails of Fleet Farm and nothing burns oil.
