My bucket truck hose replacement project is coming along very nicely, however every hose I replaced so far has been 1/4 sized and seems to be the same size as a standard 1/4 inch plumbing flare nut but I of course ordered the 1/4 inch JIC size fitting.

I always put everything into OD plumbing sizes for comparison since I work as a refrigeration tech. This other tube I found today inside the boom base of my truck thats leaking seems to be a different size all together that what I use regularly for comparison ( I know nothing about JIC sizes). I need the JIC flare fitting size to order the hose. The outer portion of the JIC nut seems to be the exact same size as a 3/8 inch (plumbing size) flare cap (a 3/8 flare nut though is a little bigger), and when I go to put the 3/8 (plumbing size) flare nut on the JIC flare fitting it slides right over it perfectly, but of course I need it to thread on, what size JIC is this?

Go here

How to Identify Fluid Ports and Connectors

Click the download button and save the pdf - trust me, you'll be glad you did... :=) Steve

BTW, you may wanna dig out your calipers - a 3/8 JIC and 3/8 inverted flair are .51" and .58" respectively - I'm NOT a "reefer guy" in any sense of the word, mostly industrial instrumentation (tubing/pipe, swagelok, etc) but if the flare fitting you're talking about is similar, that would explain the "slip fit" you're experiencing.

Anyway, with all the dim's listed in that PDF you should hopefully be able to find what ya got vs. what ya want... Steve

Call me a cynic, but bucket truck hydraulics isn't the place to learn hydraulic fitting & hose replacement by trial & error.
You should be seeking known professional guidance, and use only hose and fittings appropriate for aerial bucket use.

G'day JIC fittings are sized on thread size and threads are UNF e.g, A 9/16 jic fitting will have a 9/16 unf thread

yes you will find the full catalog of crimp fittings on bucket truck hydraulics, with #4 hose you will find #3 ( or #4,5,6) JIC crimp on one end and #6 (or #3,4,5) JIC on the other.... its verrrrrryyyy frustrating when trying to prebuild hoses unless you have the manual for THAT machine and it has the hose breakouts and the fittings listed...
RickB is totally correct also... please be careful...just remember this one small thing...!!!! hydraulics are the only thing HOLDING your big BUTT in the air!!!... the saving grace is that all cylinders have holding valves attached so if something did happen the cylinder will lock in place... its a pain in the sssss but mark every hose on both ends and make the exact hose for the replacement...
