Hello. I am strongly considering purchasing a 5205. One reservation I have is its lack of "shift on the go" main transmission. However, when I test drove one this past weekend, I noticed I could shift from 1 through 4 in A or B range without coming to a complete stop. I loved the simple operating ergonomics of this tractor. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Shifting is easy in that tractor. They are good tractors. Simple and reliable.

I purchased my 5205 in August of 05..I don't like not being able to shift on the "GO"..Owners manual says you should come to a complete stop before shifing up or down..I can hear a slight grind when I don't come to a complete stop..5205 needs more lower forward gears like the 9/3 trans has..If I was looking right now, I would strongly look at the "New" Kubotas..More bang for the buck in my opinion..

What would you consider the "extras" on the M series that the 5x05 series does not have?

I have not looked at the "New M" series..+'s over the 5205 would be the fully sycromesh trans, standard dual remotes, exhaust is turned down (extra on 5205), 5 cyl engine, etc..

Huh? you can't shift on the fly?!
Ha! I do it all the time. I seldom come to a complete stop when I don't need to. Lately, I am usually going from 1st to 2nd to 3rd in "A" range while brush hogging my hillsides. You can't jamb it, but it'll go if you feel it.
All the shift levers on my new 5205 are really smooth and almost never don't just slip right into where they're directed.
And yes, the ergonomics of the 5205 are GREAT. It is amazingly comfortable compared to other tractors I've ridden. I operate for a couple few hours without getting off and am comfortable and not too stiff when I get off and I'm not a young kid. . . easy to get in and out of the cockpit. . . everything within easy reach.

I didn't know that dual remotes came standard on the old M-series Botas.

I have owned my JD 5205 for about 9 months. I use it for a variety of tasks on my ranch. Couldn't be happier.

I looked at a lot of tractors before I bought. Deere is prevalent in my area, so that colored my thinking. I'm an engineer by trade, and didn't know a lot about ag machinery before I bought. So, I had no pre-formed opinions.
I wanted plain, proven, and popular in a tractor. I was not interested in hydrostatic or anything but the simplest transmission/engine combination.

I shred, disk, grub, move hay & dirt with ease, even though it has only 8 forward speeds. The Payne's forks have been dang useful. It is not hard to shift on the fly, and it has enough power for all the tasks I have run into so far. I have no complaints on using the loader, either. In my opinion, a good tractor, even without all the latest technology.
