If you have grandkids, when they come and visit, do you unload all the "trinkets" you've kept for whatever reason, just giving it to them?

Seems like my dad brings down his old golf clubs and older uniforms for our boys, as well as anything else he finds laying around.

BUT... when we go an visit, the boys go straight upstairs to the attic or downstairs to the cellar to looks at all the "treasure" they can find and ask gramps if they can take it with them (swords have to get mom's approval first LOL).

Went to visit dad last week, came home yesterday night (8 or so hour drive).

Driving back, both boys in the back, and they keep laughing and I can't figure out why. I hear them mention something about a "coconut", but I just figure they're making a game up.

Turns out gramps gave them a coconut that I must of gotten when I was boy that he kept (probably on a trip to Florida if I had to guess), would also guess it's a good 40 years old. Turns out the boys were holding up the coconut to motorists as they were driving by or when I was driving by them and laughing their heads off at the reactions.

The one boy would hold it over the others face to make it look like a "coconut face".

So, if you have grandkids and if they come and visit, you basically "load up on them" on all the little trinkets you've horded over the years figuring no one would ever want, and low and behold, the grand kids want them ALL!

Yeah, we want a 40 year old coconut face laying around the house...

Not really. I have given my grandsons (5 grandsons; 1 granddaughter) a lot of things, like guns, quality pocket knives; I have made things like desks, bookcase, rocking chair, stools, and a jewelry case for my granddaughter...but I don't have a lot of trinkets to give...unless you include my trophy case and my classic model car and airplane collection. They aren't getting that stuff for awhile!

My dad spent about 3 or 4 tours in south east asia as well as stints in Korea and Europe. As a kid growing up, I didn't get to see him a lot (other than when we were in the Phillipines with him or when he was stateside), but he did bring a lot of cool stuff back (cool when you're a boy). Apparently the stuff has just sat "in corners" as I remember most of it when I was a kid. To my boys, it's all like lost treasure, although my wife keeps rolling her eyes back because she's not certain where we're going to put it. It's like we're slowly moving all the stuff he never uses into our house LOL

I don't give the grandkids any "trinkets" since I don't have anything that would interest them. I do impart with things for the kids if they want them.
I have been thinking of giving each of them a pistol if they will get their CCW license. Need to do this before it becomes illegal.

Let em enjoy the time together and the laughs had. Both my paternal grandparents passed when I was an infant, and my maternal grandparents weren't too keen on me. I wish I had some of those types of memories to relive down the road.

Trinkets come and go. But those memories will last forever!

So true! I was the first grandchild in my family, and my Granddad was my best buddy. He bought me my first tricycle; it was during WWII, so I have no idea where he got it. I will never forget it and a lot of other things he did for me. He died in 1959 and I still miss him.

My granddad brought me 2 horses; at different times of course, and he got me started with Berkshire hogs for the 4-H club, and taught me many more things.

If you don't want the coconut, send it to me. That thing is awesome!

But yeah, I got all kinds of cool stuff from my grandfather. I still have most of it. Forty years from now, your kid might still have that stupid mask, along with the memories.

Come to think of it, I do have a couple of items from my Grandfather, but I got them from my father. I have his crosscut saw and his watch. To date, I have owned the watch longer than anyone. Granddad got it in 1929 and had it for thirty years, until 1959. My Dad had it from 1959 until 1981; that's 22 years. I've had it since 1981, 36 years. I intend to pass it on to my oldest Grandson.

Had to go to after school yesterday and pick up the knife my one boy forgot he had in his backpack that gramps gave him over the weekend LOL

At least he was responsible about it. Once he knew he had it, he turned it in and explained the situation. No harm no foul thank God. Our school system is pretty rural and things like this happen. The other year a high schooler forgot he had his hunting shotgun in his pick up truck. Made news big time in the local city in the next county. The charges were thankfully quietly dismissed once it was determined he was telling the truth.
