L3940/HSTC
Being new to compact tractors (actually tractors in general) at the time of purchase I didn't realize that my 39hp L3940/HSTC only has a PTO rating of 31.5hp. I'm planning on purchasing a geared tiller (Phoenix T10-GE Series Heavy Duty 66") which is rated for a 30-50hp PTO. Obviously the power requirements for this attachment are on the lower end of the power curve of my tractor, but I want a geared tiller and a tiller that at least matches the width of my tractor. I curious if any L39 (or L35, L32xx/HSTC) owners have used this tiller (or larger) and if so, did you experience any problems?

Thanks in advance

I have the same tractor (no cab) and run a Woods 72" reverse-rotation tiller. Never a problem for the L3940! Just be sure to use low range (Low-Med-High) on the gear selector, run it up to 540 PTO RPM, and have at it.

On unworked soil keep your ground speed down around 0.5 - 1.0 mph and you will have no problems at all. I'm running a 60" on a 3240 and the only thing that has slowed me down was damp, consolidated clay, which loaded up the tines and turned the blade/tine assembly into a "Flintstones" wheel. Yabba dabba doo.

I have used a Woods 72" tiller on my L3940. No horsepower problems at all. I have worked old ground, and virgin grass. I like to till at very slow ground speeds, one pass, maximum pulverization. The L3940 will not notice the load of a 72" tiller. Philip.

FYI I believe the manual for the L39 says max tiller is 60"

Our L3940 will pull a CaseIH 1250 Grinder/Mixer you just can't feed it like you would the 100+hp PTO tractor. Wife and son ground about 1000lbs. of feed with it today because everything else was tied up. The Oats pulls it down more than the ear corn or the pellet protein feed.

Could be but Kubota also says that the minimum size GL40 for a front snow blower is a 4240 which is overkill.

I think you'll be fine with a 66" tiller and a 3940. Looking at EA's web site they list the HP requirement for all three widths as the same.

As a dealer, Kubota has always consevatively rated it's equipment which is good as it doesn't get hurt by having machine hooked to it that will destroy it.

We normally do a 72" on the grand L-series tractors to cover the width and nobody has ever complained of lack of lift or power! There are differences in the rotor diameter as well as the count of teeth on the tiller as well as forward and reverse till that will make a difference in the tillers ability the same as sand, clay or sod would but with the hydro you should be fine for all!
