Question for the 60 yr and over crowd

Im 42 yrs old. When given the opportunity, I find myself really wanting to give advice to younger guys I encounter at work, hunting trips, etc. I have come to realize that my 20's and 30's were magical and I did not fully realize it. I feel there were things that I should have capitalized on but diddn't because I lacked the knowledge, confidence, or inspiration. That got me thinking about what you guys 60 and over might have for advice for someone my age. I would really like for you guys to give me your best advice on life in general (relationships with wife, kids, friends; money; career; health; religion; hobby)etc. Basically, what have you done right and what have you done wrong. What do you feel most strongly about. What do you wish you had known, done, or been told 20- 40 years ago. Im looking for serious stuff here. Never hurts to take a look in the mirror and seek out information that can be used for self improvement. thanks a million.

I 'm 64 . Because everyones' life is different, I can only give you advice about how to considered what others tell you including me .

Here it is :

1) As I am so shall you be .
2) I 'd rather be a " has-been " than a " could - have - been " .
3) advice is easier to give than to take .

My priorities are: God, Family, Country and Me! The order changes at times.
Work to Live, Don't Live to Work
Be open, honest, maintain strong integrity and keep the communications open and positive with your spouse, your kids/family and friends
Take the time to enjoy life, family and friends because life is short
You are at an age where it very easy to be drawn into the practices of "keeping up with the Jones'", don't do it save your money so you are prepared to retire someday and live comfortably
Always expect less from others than you do of yourself and you will not be disappointed near as often
Finally, protect your family and property and always be prepared to do whatever it takes to do just that

There is so much we have learned in life and about life by the time we reach our 60s and beyond. We have made mistakes, we have failed, but each time we did we gained the knowledge and wisdom to not do it again and can now help our family and friends by offering it up. We only hope that the advice is taken into consideration and used as information to help younger people make better decisions than we did.

He looked at me with that knowing smile and said , " I 'm not all that smart . Its I 've already made the mistakes you ask about " .

Totally relate to the part about living with mistakes and to add great sucesses too and raising the family..

I'm not 60 yet... getting close. Rule number one, always, always pay yourself FIRST. Can't start early enough.

Just passed 60.
Make sure you have something to do that you like and get it done. I traveled frequently for 40 years, all paid by work. For 90% of it it was fun. Since I've retired I no longer feel the "need" or "want" to travel.
It's a lot better to look back and be able to say "been there, done that" than to look back and say "I wish I had ..."

Find the "sweet spot" in current technology. Don't be on the bleeding edge, but keep ahead of everyone else.

Don't go to that online forum "Tractorbynet", it's addicting and a tremendous drain on time.

Try not to make snap decisions but be prepared for them.

Always be prepared for change, we are only surfing on the chaos of life, looking for that big wave and trying to avoid the rocks.

3. Find a hobby that you can enjoy.
4. Spend time with family (before job and hobby).
5. Avoid debt like the plague.
6. Enjoy life (family and friends) before they, or you, aren't here anymore. :thumbsup:
